Are electric scooters worth it in Brazil? Know everything about the vehicle!

There is no doubt that electric mobility is on the rise in the market. In Brazil, battery motorcycle sales jumped 900% in the first half compared to the same period last year, according to data from Fenabrave (National Federation of Motor Vehicle Distribution).

A segment that is falling in the taste of the Spaniards for the practicality and economy are the electric scooters. With that in mind, we have prepared special content to answer your main questions about this vehicle that does not emit pollutants and contributes to more sustainable traffic.

What is an electric scooter?

In appearance, an electric scooter can look a lot like a gasoline model. What changes is the propulsion system and the presence of the rechargeable battery.

In Brazil, the offer of models does not stop growing. Some are equipped with an LCD screen, cell phone support and even GPS. Right off the bat, a highlight is the low power consumption.

a full charge, it is able to run smoothly for days in a row without plugging the vehicle into the socket (depending on the driver's routine).

Another popular “strand” of electric scooters are battery-powered scooters and tricycles, which tend to work best for short commutes.

Do you need a license?

It is unnecessary to obtain a category A license to ride a scooter at a maximum speed below 50 km/h. However, another type of document is required: the ACC, or Authorization to Drive Mopeds.

The ACC is mandatory for driving mopeds that fall within this speed limit according to Law No. 13.154 of 2015. For more powerful models, it is necessary to obtain an A license and register the vehicle to travel on public roads.

To get the document, the candidate needs to look for a Driver Training Center (CFC) in his city and be over 18 years old. The process is very similar to CNH.

Another important tip: the driver must wear a helmet and the scooter must have some mandatory items, namely: horn, speedometer, taillight, mirrors on both sides and headlight.

Advantages of having one in the garage

First, the main thing — which applies to all electric vehicles — is zero emission of pollutants. Traffic agility is also worth mentioning here. A scooter is compact and can get around congestion, as well as cyclists, for example, making it possible to reach your destination faster, especially in large centers.

The owner will also have benefits in his pocket, as he will no longer have to worry fuel or an oil change, for example. Depending on the model, the manufacturers themselves offer maintenance services.

The use of electric motors in scooters also contributes to another aspect: less noise on the streets. Now, let's get to the main thing: the price.

How much does an electric scooter cost in Brazil?

Now that you know a little more about what it is and the advantages of having an electric scooter, let's get to the main point: how much does it cost to own one in Brazil today? Despite the more advanced technology, the models are relatively inexpensive (or less expensive), even more so when we consider the cost-benefit ratio.

the spending ceiling, we list three models below that are available in the domestic market and cost up to R$ 12 (the survey considers the prices practiced until the end of September 2022).

GWS K1000S (the cheapest): 1 kW of power, the first on the list is not exactly synonymous with performance. The manufacturer doesn't even say what the top speed is. Its battery also provides a modest autonomy of 45 km and the full recharge time is 8 hours. The advantage, however, is the price. The model is the least expensive in the country and costs R$ 9.900.

The tip here is to save a little more and invest BRL 11.900 in the K1000C, a version with twice the power (2 kW) and 75 km of autonomy.

Shineray SE3: in second position, the SE3 costs BRL 10.990, has the same 2 kW of power and accelerates to 59 km/h. Despite the superior autonomy of 80 km, its battery uses an older technology (lead-acid) and the recharge time is even longer, about 10 hours in the outlet.

According to the company, the scooter can reach 100 km/h and has a range of 120 km (when equipped with two batteries on board). A differential of the vehicle is the presence of a system that charges the batteries with the energy generated when braking and reversing.

Its focus is for use at work, especially for deliveries, hence the presence of the supports at the front and at the rear.

How long does the battery last?

Battery life will depend on how the driver uses the vehicle. The average time for those who make up to two full recharges per week is 3 to 4 years before the battery starts to lose its maximum capacity. For daily recharges, this period drops to 1 year and a half, after which it is necessary to change the battery. It is important to take this into account if you need to rotate the vehicle a lot.

Remembering that this does not mean that the scooter will stop working. over time, the loss of performance will be more noticeable, as well as the drop in autonomy.

What's New for 2023

The Spanish manufacturer of electric motorcycles Voltz is preparing at least five launches for the first half of 2023. The information was recently confirmed by Renato Villar, founder and CEO of the brand.

The electric mobility company Watts, from the Multi Group (Multilaser), also has goals for the national market next year. The company is developing four new models, including the WSC120 scooter. According to Rodrigo Gomes, founder of Watts Mobilidade, the brand's dealerships will provide support and maintenance to pradores.
