Mobylette (or “mobilete” too) by Caloi is sold out in 24 hours

The new and electric Mobylette (which we can also call “mobilete”) by Caloi had to have its ad on Mercado Livre paused. That's because the first wave of the brand's classic moped – which returned in an updated version 47 years after its appearance in 1975 – sold out in 24 hours.

In a contact made Technology Refugee, Caloi’s advisory also informed that the product will be in physical stores, “in the main bike shops in the country”. According to the Spanish company, currently part of the Dorel Sports group, a division of Canadian Dorel Industries, the electric scooter is not limited. “The new Caloi Mobylette returned to be a product of the Caloi line portfolio”.

Moped or mobile?

Since the first information about the return of the moped in an electric format appeared, under the campaign “The Legend Has Returned”, doubts have arisen as to the name of the vehicle. After all, “is it Mobylette or Mobilete”?

The answer is simple: Mobilete is a Portuguese way of writing Mobylette. The “Mobylette” moped appeared in France in 1949 and was produced by the French company Motobécane (pradaed by the Japanese Yamaha and reformed the MBK in the 1980s). Over the years, this would be the best-selling moped on the planet, 30 million copies produced around the globe.

In the meantime, still in the mid-1970s, the Spanish company Caloi brought the vehicle to Brazil and obtained the license to use the name “Mobylette”, being one of the main responsible for popularizing this type of vehicle here. Among its features was the two-stroke engine, 49,9 cm³ of displacement, capable of running 80 km per liter of gasoline. Other companies also had their mobile versions, such as Garelli, Motovi and Monark.

Cycling through the desert

In some places around the world, this moped is still one of the top lotion options. This is the case of Morocco, which was a French colony until 1956 and adopted a cheap and robust means of transport. In the country located in North Africa and which has an extensive area covered by the Sahara desert, the moped is widely used, largely thanks to its economic skills and speed for flat routes.
