Blood moon: understand the phenomenon that happens this Tuesday

The last lunar eclipse of 2022 takes place this Tuesday (8), known as the Blood Moon, the phenomenon will be able to be seen in only a small part of Brazil, but on the internet, of course, there will be broadcasts that will show it live our natural satellite a unique beauty. The name, despite sounding mystical (and somewhat macabre), is actually related to the color of the Moon; understand.

A Blood Moon is the result of a total lunar eclipse – when the Earth is between the Sun and the Moon. It is the eclipse that will change the visible coloration: the change occurs because of the Earth's atmosphere. When the sun's rays pass through it, small molecules that make up the atmosphere scatter blue light, which gives the sky its blue color.

This leaves the red light, refracted, behind in the shadow. When it falls on the moon during a total eclipse, the red color becomes visible. The same effect is what makes sunrises and sunsets reddish. The reddish color is the reason for the name.

In human history, the Blood Moon has also been associated with various prophecies and supernatural phenomena, which also helps with its macabre name. There are also differences in definitions, some classifications consider the Blood Moon only when there is a total lunar eclipse the Supermoon. However, this is not unanimous and the whole astronomical phenomenon is a matter of debate. In the case of this Tuesday, there is no supermoon, just an eclipse.

The spectacle will be fully visible only in Acre. In the rest of the northern region, there will be a partial eclipse (one in which only part of the Moon is covered by the umbra). But, for those in any other location who want to catch the event, some live broadcasts are scheduled over the internet.

According to the website Space., the eclipse will begin at 5:10 am (Brasília time) and should end around 1:30 am later. As it is a total lunar eclipse, as our satellite will be completely taken over by the Earth's shadow (which will be between it and the Sun), the event is also known as the "Blood Moon".
