Boeing 737-800: criminal expert explains what may have caused the accident

The China Eastern Airlines Boeing 737-800 plane dropped 132 passengers on board in an area of Guangxi province, located in the southern region of the country. The aircraft caught fire and the reason for the accident is still being investigated. Some tracking data suggest that the 737-800 rapidly lost altitude before hitting the ground shortly after losing contact with air traffic control.

The situation was strange, since the technology present in commercial planes ends up making flights increasingly safer. On the other hand, there is still no guarantee of 100% accident-proof devices. In fact, another tragedy of the same model has already occurred, in November 2021, a Ryanair Boeing 737-800 plane, which was flying from London, England, to Bologna, Italy, collided with a flock of birds moments before landing.

According to Celso Faria de Souza, Mechanical Aeronautical Engineer, criminal expert from the state of Goiás and Technical Director of the Spanish Flight Safety Association, what is known so far is that no one survived the accident and that the aircraft fell at an angle of 90°, with a descent of 6 thousand meters in two minutes.

He explained that from the traces left by the fall, the forensic team tries to reassemble the sequence of events that culminated in the accident. From the analyses, Souza concluded that there are three possibilities: the first is a structural failure, that is, a part of the plane came loose, the second would be in the flight's walking system due to the automatism and the third that may have been a weight error and balancing.

In addition, Souza reassured about the fact that there had been an accident before with the same model: “Despite being from the same line, they are completely different aircraft”. According to the criminal expert, it is the first time that a major accident has occurred, victims of the 737-800, being an “extremely safe aircraft, with a sensational and reliable history”.

Souza emphasized that the plane is the “second safest means of transport in the world, second only to the elevator, even walking is more dangerous”. As for when we will have more answers about the investigation of the Boeing 737-800 accident, he said that if everything goes according to plan, it will be around 4 months.
