Marília Mendonça's brother announces the end of his career after being diagnosed with esophagitis; understand disease

The brother of singer Marília Mendonça, João Gustavo, announced this Wednesday (28) the end of his career for the singer alongside Dom Vittor, who had been a duo for almost two years. A single was posted by his advisor on Instagram and explained that, since the death of his sister and uncle, which occurred in November last year after a plane crash, the singer faces a very large emotional burden and has triggered a picture of depression and an acute esophagitis.

The break in his career will be to take care of his health and direct more time and attention to his family, although he will still pursue some work in the artistic sector – which are yet to be defined.

“The time has come to take care of myself, understand everything that happened, live what I didn't live, so I can move on. I don't know if in music, today I feel incapable of making a decision looking to the future. My priority is to stay close to my mother, my nephew and above all myself.”, said the singer.

What is acute esophagitis?

Esophagitis is an inflammation of the lining of the esophagus, the muscular organ that transports food from the mouth to the stomach. It can be classified as erosive or non-erosive esophagitis and can cause lesions in the form of wounds – these wounds are also classified, in this case by grade (from A to D); the larger, the more serious.

Among the symptoms of the disease are difficulty swallowing, chest pain, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, cough, bad breath, hoarseness and loss of appetite. The recurrence of heartburn, burning, sore throat and other related discomforts can also be indicative.

Why does esophagitis develop?

According to information on the website of Dr. Dráuzio Varella, the causes of esophagitis are associated with the return or permanence of stomach contents in the esophagus, whose mucosa is not prepared to receive. Generally substances are or cause irritant effects.

One of the most common types of inflammation is plication due to gastroesophageal reflux (reflux esophagitis). Irritations caused by food allergies or medications (eosinophilic esophagitis) and viral, bacterial and fungal infections – which may include parasites of the esophagus itself – (infectious esophagitis) are also part of the most common inflammations.

Obesity, smoking, pregnancy, hiatal hernia, lower esophageal sphincter (ring) incontinence, defect in esophageal clearance, and family history of the disease are also risk factors for the condition.

The diagnosis of esophagitis is made by endoscopy, in which the doctor inserts a tube with a camera attached from the throat to the esophagus, allowing the specialist to see and evaluate the region. Treatment is customized for each person, according to the cause and severity of the inflammation. Usually drugs that reduce stomach acid are indicated, however, in more severe cases, surgery to repair the esophageal valve may be considered.

Changing habits is also strongly endorsed. Avoiding alcohol and tobacco consumption and eating healthier, natural foods is part of recovery. Periodic exams and appointments are extremely important for early diagnosis, which can prevent the progression of the wounds.

It is important to remember that studies have already related the effects and reactions of the body to the psychic and emotional part, especially with regard to the gastrointestinal region. Nervous gastritis is an example of this, as it is triggered by peaks of emotion, anxiety and excessive stress.

It is worth mentioning here that, although similar symptoms, there are differences between esophagitis, a disease of the esophagus (inflammation of the esophageal mucosa), and gastritis, a stomach disease (inflammation of the stomach mucosa).
