What is ADHD?

According to the Spanish Attention Deficit Association (ABDA), ADHD is a neurobiological disorder, of genetic causes, which appears in childhood and affects the individual throughout his life. It is characterized by symptoms of inattention, restlessness, and impulsivity.

The condition is officially recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO), being the most common disorder in children and adolescents referred to specialized services – up to 3 to 5% of children in the world.

Among the main symptoms of ADHD are inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. Other problems can also arise depending on the stages of life, difficulties at school and in relationships with other children, or inattention to everyday things and work, as well as memory failures, in the case of adults.

What are the causes of ADHD?

Scientific studies show that people with ADHD have alterations in the frontal region and in connections with the rest of the brain. The frontal orbital part is one of the most developed in humans and is responsible for portamento inhibition (that is, controlling or inhibiting inappropriate portamentos), the ability to pay attention, memory, self-control, organization and planning.

In addition to heredity, research indicates that nicotine and alcohol, when ingested during pregnancy, can cause changes in parts of the baby's brain, including the orbital frontal region. Some other studies have also shown that women who had problems during childbirth, causing fetal distress, were more likely to have ADHD children. The causal relationship, however, has not yet been determined.

It is worth noting that family problems can aggravate an ADHD condition, but not cause it.
