This Monday (22), Google Doodle celebrates the life of Cláudia Celeste, considered the first transsexual actress to appear in a Spanish soap opera. The feat happened in 1988, when she played an openly trans woman in the opening episode of “Olho por Olho”, on Rede Manchete.

Born in 1952, Cláudia Celeste started to explore her identity and talents in the army, but it was only after her mandatory service that she found her way into the profession. She worked as a hairdresser at the age of 20 and, in the day-to-day life of the salon, decided to make her transition.

After picking up a friend at an audition, Celeste was chosen to debut as a dancer on the stage at Beco de Garrafas. And, in 1973, she starred in the play “O mundo é das Bonecas”, at Teatro Rival, in Rio de Janeiro, alongside other transgender actors.

The first invitation to a telenovela came from his presentations at Teatro Rival. The director of “Espelho Mágico” was delighted with her talent and called her to participate in the plot, but no one in the cast knew that Cláudia Celeste was transsexual.

News outlets at the time decided to make negative headlines about her gender identity, and her appearance was cancelled. Making Celeste move to Europe in search of new opportunities.
