ASMR: what it is and where to find these sounds

ASMR is a relatively new term that has aroused more and more people's curiosity. But what does ASMR mean? This acronym means “autonomous sensory meridian response” and refers to a physiological reaction, provoked by specific sounds, that produces pleasant sensations in the ears and head. In this article, we are going to better explain these sounds, the main transmission channels and the effects they can cause.

What is ASMR?

ASMR is a term used to describe the sense of well-being that some people experience when listening to certain sounds. The acronym ASMR stands for “Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response”.

What are the types of ASMR?

There are several types of ASMR, each with different sounds that can cause different sensations. Some of the main types are:

  • Brushing: this is the best known type and consists of listening to the sounds of someone cleaning or running their hands over a surface.
  • Crinkling: This type is caused by the sound of papers being folded or ripped.
  • Eating: this type includes the sounds produced during chewing or swallowing.
  • Haircut: This type is caused by the sound of scissors cutting hair.
  • Mouth sounds: are sounds produced by mouth movements, hissing, popping or whispering.

ASMR is a subjective experience, that is, each person perceives it differently. Some people report that when listening to certain sounds, they feel a shiver down their spine, others say they feel a tingling sensation in their body and some even fall asleep.

Although there is still no scientific definition for ASMR, studies suggest that this sensation may be caused by a decrease in the activity of our sympathetic nervous system, that is, the one that controls our body's responses to stress.

Some experts claim that ASMR can be a form of meditation, as people who try it are in a state of deep relaxation and are able to focus better on what they are doing.
