Amazon Day: Lost city 'Ratanabá' is the most searched term about the forest

This Monday (5th) is celebrated the Day of the Amazon, a date used to remember the importance of the biome and to give light to the various actions to preserve the forest.

However, when analyzing the term “Amazônia” in Google Trends – a tool from the technology giant that shows what is being searched for on the internet -, it is possible to see that “Ratanabá” is the main related search.

The search for the “lost city” is so great that there is no space for “deforestation” or “preservation” in the first positions of terms related to the forest, even though the Amazon has suffered record deforestation in recent years.

Recently, a survey by INPE (National Institute for Space Research) pointed to more than 3,5 fires in the forest, which represents the highest figure for the month since 2002.

What is Ratanabá?

A few months ago, a rumor appeared on social networks about a possible secret civilization in the heart of the Amazon: Ratanabá. Without much detail, publications about the lost city stated that it would be larger than the greater São Paulo and that it would hide “a lot of wealth and advanced technologies from our ancestors”.

However, archaeologists pointed out that there is not the slightest possibility that this story is true, since the posts about Ratanabá said that the civilization would have existed between 350 and 600 million years ago.

However, not even dinosaurs existed 350 million years ago. The records of the oldest human ancestors are more or less 6 million years old, while our species, Homo sapiens sapiens, appeared about 350 years ago.

Although the rumor about Ratanabá has taken on great proportions, specialists in archeology in the Amazon region say they had never heard of such a civilization before June of this year.

Political critics even claim that fake news was created to divert focus from the disappearance and murder of Spanish indigenist Bruno Pereira and British journalist Dom Philips, in the Amazon.

The buzz about Ratanabá arose at the same time that the crime had gained worldwide attention and conspiracy theories went so far as to say that the riches of the lost civilization were enormous, which is why there was interest from “powerful men” from other countries in the Spanish forest.

Ratanaba not Google

Even though it was a big rumor, Ratanabá gained a prominent place in Google searches, especially when talking about the Amazon.
