Have you ever tried to share a post on Instagram and failed miserably? I understand your frustration. Before I learned where to click to share, I would press any button. Afterwards, of course, I couldn't reproduce the hit or miss.

o share Instagram post?
There are three ways to share a post you saw on the timeline:
- Via direct message, better known as “DM” (direct message), on Instagram;
- Through stories, which are available 24 hours a day;
- Through a link, for example, in messaging apps, or WhatsApp.
To share on Instagram, select the paper airplane symbol at the bottom of the photo or video. Then, choose whether you want to publish in your stories (1) or DM (2):
In the case of a private message, you can find the contact in the search box or in the frequent contacts list. In addition, you can write a text to be sent together in the “Write a message” field.
Finally, if you want to find the post link to share it in another application, you must click on the three dots button above the photo:
Then choose what you want to share the photo or video:
- share: opens the sharing window for the most frequent contacts and the most used applications;
- Link: Copies the link to that publication. You can paste this link into an app, email message or embed it in a blog post, for example;
- QR code: generates a code for the photo or video, which can be read by the cell phone camera.
o share Instagram stories?
Like videos and photos, you can also share stories with other friends. The logic is the same as for posts on the timeline: click on the plane to send via DM (1) or tap on the three dots to share externally (2):
If you chose to send stories via direct, search for or choose the contact you want to send them to. If you have already chosen to share outside the platform, copy the link or tap “share on…” to choose the app.
The same process applies if you want to send a Reels video. The only difference, however, is where the buttons are located:
o share the Instagram link?
Unfortunately, the way to share own and third party profile link on Instagram are different. Therefore, I will explain both processes here.
share your profile link
Often, you might want to know your profile link so you can add it to a resume or PowerPoint presentation, for example.
The easiest way to find this out is through your mobile browser. Go to Instagram, tap your photo and then the link field. Then select to share or copy the url:
Another option is to invite someone to follow you through the Instagram app itself. To do so, follow the steps below.
- First, tap on your profile picture (1) and select the sandwich menu (2). Then tap on “Settings”:
- Now, click on “Follow and invite friends”. Next, choose between: share profile via WhatsApp; by email; by SMS; or select “Invite friends via…” if you want to choose another app:
share a third-party profile link
- The first thing you have to do to share someone else's profile is access it from the app. Then tap on the three dots menu.
- Now, choose between “Copy profile URL” (1) to share it in another app and “share this profile” (2) to send it to a friend within Instagram itself:
