How to edit an awesome profile picture

Do you want to stand out on social media? So, you need to learn some tricks to edit your profile picture. Calm down, it's very simple and you can make free tools on your cell phone. Here, let's opt for simplicity, okay? Gone then!

Edit profile picture online

Before you start editing the photo itself, we need you to install the app. My personal suggestions are Adobe Express (Android and iOS), canva (Android and iOS) e Snapseed (Android and iOS). But, there are certainly other good options in the app stores for you to try.

Know that they are all good tools for you to enhance an image. Generally speaking, you will use one (and not another) according to your usage profile. For example, if in addition to editing photos, you create graphics for social networks, you will probably like Adobe Express and Canva better.

Also, the same feature may be free in one of the apps, but in another be available only for premium account. Meaning, you'll need to use them to find what works best for you.

Now that you have the apps installed, it's time to get your hands dirty!

Remove, blur or change background

In Adobe Express, you can remove and change the background color. However, there is no exclusive blur tool for the background.

In Canva, it's the opposite: you can blur the background of the image, but to edit it you need to have a paid account.

Finally, Snapseed is the best for background blurring because it lets you choose the format as well as the blur, transition, and vignette intensities. It doesn't have a tool to remove the background, however, it is still possible to use double exposure to combine two photos.

Use effects and filters

When it comes to effects and filters, my pick goes to Canva. That's because the app manages to be the most intuitive on my list. It gathers all the resources in a single tab, called “Effects”, and has a thumbnail to exemplify each one of them.

The other two apps are tied. That's because the one from Adobe has fewer options for filters and effects, but it also offers a preview of the resources, in addition to gathering all of them in a single tab, called “Looks” (where the “Blur” effect is also located).

In Snapseed, on the other hand, you will have more options than the previous one. But you will also need more patience to try them out one by one, as you can find a part in the “Appearances” tab and another in the “Tools” tab.

Edit and enhance images

Ever heard of brightness, contrast, saturation, and sharpness? These are features you need to master to get even better results in your photos.

O brightness it concerns clarity and you should use it when the photo is dark or low light.

Already saturation refers to the intensity of colors, and you can use it to tone down colors or make them more vivid.

A sharpness, in turn, enhances details and is a useful feature when the image is slightly out of focus.

Lastly, I want to talk about the contrast🇧🇷 It determines the difference between the brightest and darkest parts of your photo. So it's good to use it to transform a dull photo into a richer scenery.

Which social network?

Each social network has its own vibe and, in general, you can use a more relaxed photo for a personal profile than a professional one. However, nowadays, the borders are not well defined and it is a challenge to add a professional contact in a personal profile. Therefore, I think it is safer to bet on your personal style – be it sober or relaxed.

Also, if you have a profile on multiple social networks, consider using a single photo on all of them. This will make a strong impression and help reinforce your personal image. This is very useful for anyone who wants to associate their image with their name or that of their company.

Remember that each social network has a specific profile picture size. Therefore, respect the dimensions to publish a good and undistorted photo.

See the resampled size for each social network:

  • Instagram: 320 x 320 px;
  • WhatsApp: 500 x 500 px;
  • Facebook: 170 x 170 px;
  • LinkedIn: 400 x 400 px;
  • YouTube: 800 x 800 px;
  • Twitter: 400 x 400 px;
  • Discord: 128 x 128 px;
  • TikTok: 200 x 200 px.

Pay attention to the 1:1 ratio when editing your profile picture.
