Clubhouse: what is and how the social audio network works

Clubhouse, a new social network that is gaining worldwide popularity, is a kind of open podcast that features the presence of celebrities and chat rooms on various topics.

The app also provides an option for private chats in close friends only rooms. But what caught a lot of attention was the fact that to enter any of the Clubhouse rooms it is necessary to receive an invitation.

The invitation system to enter the social network was very successful at the beginning of the app and, probably, caused the great worldwide “fever”. After all, users who were able to log in to the platform felt somewhat special.

In addition, the tool used invitations so as not to lose control of growth. Because, at the time of sudden fame, the company still had a small team to manage the application and the overhead could directly affect the users' experience.

Clubhouse co-founder and CEO Paul Davison has stated that the social network could leave the invitation system behind by August, but did not give a specific date for the feat.

Unlike WhatsApp, on the social network it is not possible to write messages, send photos or videos, only send audios.

Remember that the Clubhouse gained great popularity when Elon Musk, owner of Tesla and Space X, participated in chat rooms. Within a week, Google searches for the app grew 525%, showing the new phenomenon that was approaching.

What you need to know about the Clubhouse

In the Clubhouse, the durations of the chat rooms have a time predetermined by the creator and there is no option to save or record the conversations on the social network and they are also not stored on the platform.

The application rooms can have up to XNUMX simultaneous participants and the chat creator can control the authorization to use the participants' microphones.

To get an invitation, you don't need to have a friend on the platform, just download the app and join a waiting list synchronized with your phone contacts.

Meet the creators of the Clubhouse

The creators of the platform, Rohan Seth, a former Google employee, and Paul Davidson, a Silicon Valley entrepreneur, announced in January this year that they are working on an Android version that is due out soon.

The founders revealed that they met in 2011 and worked on various ideas until they arrived at the Clubhouse, a “new kind of voice-based social product, enabling people everywhere to speak, tell stories, develop ideas and build friendships around the world. ”.

Clubhouse banned in China

The application was blocked by the “Great Firewall” of China. Users in WeChat groups started reporting an inability to connect to the service on Monday morning (8), and are trying to help each other bypass the block using technologies such as a VPN.

The network has received criticism even in the US for its ineffective moderation and lack of abuse prevention systems, so it is not surprising that it was banned in China, a country where the government exercises tight control over all means of communication.

Spotify launched Greenroom app to compete for Clubhouse

Spotify launched a new app this Wednesday (16) to compete with Clubhouse in the voice chat social networking market. The new Swedish music streaming tool was named Greenroom.

Despite being a new release from Spotify, Greenroom is the refurbishment of the Locker Room application, which was launched by the company in March of this year, only with new features.

Users will be able to log into the new app with their own Spotify ID and will be able to participate in live voice chats. To stand out in the market, Greenroom will have tools for recording conversations that can become podcasts and be hosted on the streaming platform.

The audio rooms in the applications can be created by any user and the maximum limit is 1.000 participants simultaneously. The chats will be defined by themes, for example, music, sport, culture, etc., but it will also be possible to create free environments.

Moderators will be able to control who will have access to the microphone and listeners can interact applause, or ask for the floor.

The new Spotify app will be available for free for Android and iOS in 135 countries, including Brazil.

Spotify has announced that it will create a Creators Fund, in order to help people who work on the platform to monetize their content in a friendly way. The company did not announce the exact date for opening the fund, but it allows interested parties to register to participate in the movement.

“We believe Spotify has an opportunity to not only enable live streaming, but to help drive discovery, drive consumption and accelerate growth in the live category overall. Today's app launch is our opportunity to start laying the groundwork for the list of exciting content and features Spotify has in store for our live audio adventure."
