End of LiveLeak: video site focused on blood and violence closed

On the air since 2006, LiveLeak, a site known for hosting videos of violence and blood, has come to an end. The platform became famous for content that was usually excluded from other networks like YouTube and Facebook.

Instead, the address redirects to ItemFix, a video site that prohibits violent content. In the blog, LiveLeak founder Hayden Hewitt said that the end of the page is due to changes in the world today. “The world has changed a lot in recent years, the Internet beside it and we the people”, he justified.

Despite this, the creator of the site did not give more details about the reasons that led him to close operations now. “Everything is different now, everything moves forward. I do not like it. I liked it a lot more when it was the Wild West ”, he pleaded in an interview with the YouTube channel Trigger Warning.

LiveLeak's growth was driven by videos of blood and violence under the slogan "Redefining Media". The page hosted controversial content and even faced legal problems. The UK even tried to block the site when content from children struggling started to go viral. At the time, Hewitt defended LiveLeak and said the platform showed reality.

Something similar happened in 2014, when American journalist James Foley was beheaded by the Islamic State terrorist group. At the time, the website showed the video in which the man was killed. “We've shown the world the true horror of this form of execution more than once in the past and we can find no compelling reason to even be thought of as the promoter of this group's actions,” said the platform's creator.

“For the members, the uploaders, the casual visitors, the trolls and the occasionally deranged people who have been with us. You have been our constant companions, and although we probably haven't been able to get together very often, you are appreciated more than you know. On a personal level, you fascinated and amused me with your content. Lastly, to those who are no longer with us. I still remember you.”, ends Hewitt in LiveLeak's farewell text.
