IMAX film versus conventional

Price

The first difference between IMAX and mainstream movies is the price. Due to its high audiovisual technology and structure – essential for the experience – ticket prices for IMAX movies are more expensive, and can cost up to three times the price of a standard ticket.

screen and images

IMAX cinemas have screens 16 meters high and 22 meters long, against 12 meters high and 20 meters long in conventional cinemas. This helps to fill the viewer's entire field of vision, as the screens also see in a concave format, different from the normal, straight ones.

In addition, the resolution reaches 10 by 7 pixels – more than double that of normal screens that have only 2.048 by 1.080 pixels.

Production

Films in IMAX format are produced by different cameras – which, of course, does not prevent a conventional film from being transformed into IMAX, as happened recently 'Matrix', from 1999. movies ones. This directly affects the resolution of the images, making them about 70 times sharper, clearer and more colorful – a “touchable” impression.

Cameras used for film in IMAX format are among the most expensive on the market. The investment for the production of the film is also high.

Audio

Another very punctual feature and one of the most noticeable is the sound. a bigger screen, bigger speakers are needed too. In conventional rooms the speakers are placed behind the projection screen, which is standard. In IMAX, in addition to the wider frequency and more powerful output, the distribution also changes, as the intention is to bring the entire space of the cinema into the film, making the sound travel and echo in every corner. Design may vary depending on site structure.

Room format

And speaking of structure, the aforementioned IMAX theaters have a different geometry – all part of the plan to throw the viewer “into the screen”. The chairs are arranged in an angular shape to fit the shape of the concave screen. The intention is to approach the screen without losing the field of vision.

In the traditional cinema space, the screens are simple straight and the chairs are in straight rows. Thus, there is the old dispute for the seats in the middle, as the structure does not benefit so much those who sit in corners or in places that lose the canvas.
