Father's Day: what is the origin of the date in Brazil?

This Sunday (14) is celebrated Father's Day, a date that brings parents and children together and is characterized by the traditional family barbecue, but also the exchange of gifts. But, after all, where did the idea of having a day dedicated to fathers come from and why was the second Sunday of August chosen in Brazil?

According to information from Agência Brasil, the date was established by publicist Sylvio Bhering, in 1953. At the time, the professional was director of the newspaper O Globo and Rádio Globo, according to records on the memory website of the unication company.

Initially, the chosen date was August 16th and had the title Father's Day. The intention was that the commemoration coincided with the Day of São Joaquim, father of Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ.

Later, the Catholic Church changed the day to celebrate São Joaquim, but the eighth month of the year was so successful among merchants that they gained another period to warm up sales, which made the date perpetuate around here.

“Mother's Day already existed, so the idea was: why not also have a Father's Day? And, here in Brazil, more openly, a marketing idea, even advertising, emerged. So a lot of dictation even to move energy”, explained Sérgio Dantas, professor of Marketing at Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie, to Agência.

São Joaquim started to be celebrated on July 26th, together with Sant'Ana, mother of Maria, which became Grandparents' Day. It is also worth noting that Sunday for Father's Day was not a day of random thinking, as the first day of the week is dedicated to meetings and family lunches.

“I believe it was strategically chosen because Ercio has important dates. We end the year at Christmas, which is the big date. Then, in the first semester, there is Mother's Day, which is the second biggest movement date. Soon after, in June, there's Valentine's Day. And then only Children's Day, in October. I think the idea was to try to space this out throughout the year”, highlighted Dantas, adding that Father's Day was the last date to be defined.

Only Brazil celebrates Father's Day in August

Another curiosity is that only Brazil celebrates Father's Day in August. In other countries there is also the celebration, however, the most widespread date in the world, recognized in at least 70 countries, is the third Sunday of June.

This story starts in the United States; Sonora Luise Smart, daughter of a farmer who fought in the Civil War in 1862, wanted to honor her father, William Jackson, who raised the children alone after his wife's death. Thus, June 19, Sonora's father's birthday, was the day chosen for Father's Day. The idea spread and was made official in 1966 by President Lyndon Johnson on the third Sunday of June.

“It defaulted to being on the third Sunday, which was even an easier day for families to be together and to experience the purpose of Father's Day, which is precisely this union, union. The United States is a country that dictates trends, many countries ended up following their determination”, explained the professor.

There are also countries that celebrate the date on March 19, Saint Joseph's Day, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Andorra, Bolivia and Honduras.
