Polaroid Challenge: trend based on serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer goes viral on TikTok

In September, Netflix released the series “Dahmer: An American Cannibal”, which tells the story of Jeffrey Dahmer, a serial killer who claimed 17 victims in the United States. Streaming production has gained great popularity around the world and has become one of the most talked about topics on social media in recent weeks.

the great fame, some TikTok users decided to create a trend – trend – about the cannibal. Dubbed the “Polaroid Challenge,” the prank of sorts consists of users recording themselves reacting to photos taken by Jeffrey Dahmer of his victims.

After murdering his victims, Dahmer would pose their bodies in sexual poses and take pictures of them, which was intended to preserve memories of the men he killed.

After the challenge went viral, TikTok announced the removal of the content, but the problem ended up becoming even bigger, more and more users trying to reproduce the trend to gain views on the platform.

It is important to remember that, despite the Netflix production being a fiction, it is still based on a true story, of people who lost their lives and families that were destroyed by the actions of Jeffrey Dahmer.

Families of victims even complained about the series. Although this is by no means the first series to put a real killer in evidence, Jeffrey Dahmer's own story being portrayed in several documentaries, series, films and podcasts, it has been generating discussions about ethics around the world.

As much as it is attracting a lot of attention and praise from the public, there are also many criticisms and negative reactions to the series. The main reason is the production's approach to the families of Dahmer's victims, or even its failure to reach out to them.

This is because the series claims to take the point of view of the victims of the serial killer, mostly men and boys from marginalized ethnic groups. Netflix stated that the series would give "a voice to the victims of notorious serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer" the production.

However, family members of one of Dahmer's victims have spoken publicly about Netflix's production, saying they were never consulted about the series. Relatives of one of the dead at the hands of Jeffrey Dahmer still questioned the need for yet another entertainment product to explore his very real traumas.
