Full Circle revealed that Skate 4 will be a free-to-play game, features cross-play and cross-progression, and will have a different name.
The new game will be called “skate.”, and will be released for PlayStation, Xbox and PC. The news was announced during the event The Board Room, which also confirmed that skate. will take place in San Vansterdam, a sort of sister city to San Vanelona, home to Skate and Skate 2.
Full Circle explained the reason for opting for a new name, skate., instead of simply calling the game Skate 4, following the current sequence of games in the franchise. The reason, according to the game's developer studio, is that this new game is not a sequel, nor a reboot or remake, but a new platform, which the studio will build upon for years to come.
Thus, it is possible to assume that the sequence of games that stopped at Skate 3 has been interrupted, and that “skate.” will continue to evolve over the years rather than having sequel releases, Skate 4, 5, etc. o the name says it all, we shouldn't expect sequels: it's “skateboard, period.”

Because it's a free-to-play game, some questions arise about whether the game will work, and Full Circle explained that it works by a few rules in skating, which include: no pay-to-win, no locked map areas behind paywalls, no cashout without payment and no paid gameplay perks.
This is encouraging for players used to games that work with microtransactions, who know that sometimes some games make it impossible to play without buying items.
For now, skate. no release date has been announced.
