“Breaking Bad” game inspired by “GTA” almost got off the ground

Can you imagine a “Breaking Bad” game inspired by the adventures of “Grand Theft Auto”? Amazingly, this was something that crossed the mind of series creator Vince Gilligan.

In an interview with the Inside the Gilliverse podcast, the director spoke about the unusual idea and claims to have suggested the development of the game to some companies, but the plan never got off the ground.

“I'm not much of a video game player, but what might you not know 'GTA'?” said Gilligan, when answering a fan question. “I remember saying to the guys walking around Apple now, who originally said yes to 'Breaking Bad': 'Who owns 'GTA'? Can't you have a module? Can there be a 'Breaking Bad' game?"

In addition to that plan, Gilligan talked about his other ideas for the gaming world. “Some of them reached the market”, stated the director. “We tried to make a virtual reality experience on Sony's PlayStation VR. We made a mobile game that was short-lived,” he added.

The mobile game in the series was “Breaking Bad: Criminal Elements”, made available for Android and iOS in 2019. In the game, players walked a drug empire under the supervision of Walter White and Jesse Pinkman. Despite the success of “Breaking Bad”, the game failed to gain public attention and was shut down the following year after its release.

Gilligan also talked about ideas for adaptations of “Better Call Saul,” another hit series created by the director. However, like “Breaking Bad”, no plans went forward. The spin-off, incidentally, reaches its last episode on the 15th and promises to be exciting.
