Dog snacks: yet another brand withdrawn from the market; check out

The National Consumer Secretariat (Senacon) determined the immediate collection of more canine snacks contaminated with ethylene glycol. According to information from Agência Brasil, Balance Bifinhos, manufactured by the company Pets Mellon Industria de Produtos para Comida Animal Ltda (BRF Pet), will also be withdrawn from the market.

The decision was taken after the company itself announced the contamination of its products with a toxic substance. The Department of Inspection of Products of Animal Origin (Dipoa), of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Mapa), had already determined the collection of these snacks “throughout the national territory” last week, after officially receiving the voluntary batch recall.

“ in the new united state, there are a total of six companies determined to recall their products after detecting two batches of propylene glycol contaminated with monoethylene glycol, acquired from Tecno Clean: Bassar Indústria e ércio Ltda, FVO Alimentos Ltda, Peppy Pet Indústria and ércio de Alimentos para Animals, Upper Dog ercial Ltda, Petitos Indústria e ercio de Alimentos, and now Pets Mellon Industria de Produtos para Alimentos Animal Ltda”, informed the folder.

The recall applies to the following dog treats: Balance Bifinhos Filhote Frango: batch 22V074 (manufactured on 15/03/2022); Balance Steaks Meat Vegetables: batch 22V085 (manufactured on 26/03/2022); and Balance Roasted Chicken Steaks: batch 22V085 (manufactured on 26/03/2022).

According to Senacon, so far, there is "no evidence of dog deaths caused by the ingestion of snacks". In an official note, the company stated that it conducts its own and independent technical analysis.

Understand the case

In September, several dog owners and activist groups raised the alarm about the deaths of some dogs after they were given Bassar treats. According to the Civil Police of Minas Gerais, more than 54 animals died in 11 states and the Federal District after ingestion.

Reports indicated that the animals died after renal and hepatic failure that occurred due to ethylene glycol intoxication. The cases drew the attention of Senacon, which notified the company, and of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Mapa), which determined that all companies that had acquired lots AD5053C22 and AD4055C21 of the raw material propylene glycol from TecnoClean Industrial LTDA should suspend the use.

Subsequently, an investigation by Mapa proved, in addition to contamination, the possibility that the contaminated ingredient had gone to human food factories; the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) even decided to collect pasta from Keishi (Bbbr Indústria e Ércio de Macarrão Ltda). Mapa explained that propylene glycol (an organic product from the same family of ethylene glycol, but non-toxic) is a product that can be used in animal feed, provided it is purchased from registered companies. The current ethylene glycol contamination would come from an unregistered company.

“The investigations that are being carried out are related to a possible contamination of propylene glycol by monoethylene glycol. So far, there is no directive from the ministry to suspend the use of products that contain propylene glycol in their formulation, in addition to those already mentioned.”

On another occasion, TecnoClean clarified, in a note, that it does not manufacture propylene glycol, having purchased it from the company A&D Química Ércio Eireli and resold the distributor to the national market.
