End of Evernote? Application developer purchase tool

The classic note-taking and task-organizing app Evernote has just been acquired by app developer Bending Spoons.

The news was disclosed in a post on Evernote's own website, and Ian Small, CEO of the app, said that the transfer will likely take place in early 2023 and that Bending Spoons will be the new owner of the beloved online notebook.

“For Evernote, this decision is the next strategic step in our journey to be an extension of your brain,” wrote Small. "Partnering with Bending Spoons will accelerate the delivery of improvements to our teams, professional, personal and free offerings."

Evernote was created more than 20 years ago, in 2000, by Russian-American businessman Stepan Pachikov and was very successful among people who needed to organize themselves, manage day-to-day tasks or even sort promises through their “notebook”. infinite paper”.

When Phil Libin joined the company as CEO in 2007, he decided to focus more on the web, smartphones and Mac, starting Evernote 3.0 in 2008.

At the time, this was the best decision for both the company and the app, as shortly thereafter, from 2010 to 2015, Evernote earned hundreds of millions of dollars from investors Sequoia, Meritech Capital and Nikkei.

The web tool has also reached approximately 11 million users and in 2013, Evernote was valued at almost a billion dollars, but after that, the company saw things go downhill.

After the director of operations left the company, Libin started looking for partnerships with physical product brands Moleskine and Pfeiffer, in order to launch lines of table accessories under the Evernote brand, but they still did not have great success.

After Libin's departure from Evernote in 2015, the company cut 18% of its staff and closed three of its 10 global offices and hasn't stopped there. In 2018, the main executives were dismissed, including the technical director and another 15% of the remaining team.

Chris O'Neill, CEO of Evernote at the time, explained it as a necessary measure to correct the company's recent over-expansion and “inefficiency”.

In 2018 alone, when Ian Small took over as CEO, Evernote could breathe and raised close to $100 million in revenue, plus millions of paying customers and over 250 million users.

But even so, it was not enough for the company to be able to come out of the dark, as it failed to pay attention to the competition and the innovations in the market, having several types of scarce resources on its platform when other similar services in the sector were stopped.

Now it is not known what and for what Bending Spoons will use Evernote, whether it will keep or whether in the future it will discontinue the application.

Luca Ferrari, CEO of Bending, said the company – which just emerged from a $340 million deal round – will apply its “proprietary technologies” to Evernote to “increase its usefulness” and “strengthen its reach”.

“Our mission at Bending Spoons is to make a lasting positive impact on our customers, our teammates and society at large. Every day, millions of people around the world rely on Evernote to organize their lives.” "The one, Evernote is a perfect fit for the portfolio and we are delighted to be able to serve their large and loyal customer base."
