New poster for 'Matrix Resurrections'.

The first release of "Matrix" took place in 1999, bringing a revolutionary milestone for cinema in the face of its production technologies, plot and theories that "bugged" the minds of the majority. Briefly (and crudely), the story is based on the existence of a virtual reality (the Matrix) where human beings live their lives normally without knowing that everything is about an intelligent and artificial system that manipulates the minds of the population in order to suck and produce energy.

Within that, Thomaz Anderson (Reeves) – later Neo – starts to raise doubts about this reality and, later, awakens to the real world, becoming who he should be: “The Chosen One” responsible for ending the simulation.

The year 2003 was even more remarkable for the saga, since the sisters Lana Wachowski and Lilly Wachowski, directors of the franchise, advanced in history and released in the same year “Matrix Reloaded” and “Matrix Revolutions” – the third and last film , until now – which left some loose ends and some anxiety for the unfolding of “The Matrix 4”, since the plot implies that the beloved Matrix couple dies after the war against the machines.

However, Lana Wachowski, who this time produced the film without her filmmaker sister, knew exactly how to “Resurrect” the franchise even after 18 years. “Matrix Resurrections” brings several – many even – references to the first film, which of course was necessary due to the space-time between productions and the outcome of Revolutions.

However, despite the nostalgia, it is not just a remake, but a new era for The Matrix. The film used and abused what was best: theories. The current advance in technology, however, has held back on special effects and added more realistic fights, which may be a disappointment for those expecting a spectacle full of stunts and powers (that doesn't mean it doesn't).

So far, nothing new under the sun of what fans expected and what the trailer showed. However, one thing stood out: the humor. Yes! Unlike the others, Matrix 4 brought a small dose of humor that speaks directly to the fans, which, I confess, caused a shiver, emotion and satisfaction – whoever watches it will understand me.

And speaking of emotion, not to mention the reunion of Reeves and Moss, as well as their respective characters. It's interesting how long the film's new production has married the older appearance of both in real life. The actor's interpretation and his reinsertion into the role of Neo is something that perpetuates the name and legacy of The Matrix, explaining and clarifying the ideas about the workings behind artificial intelligence and, best of all, giving the deserved and due space to women (accept !). I would also like to say that, in fact, The Matrix is a franchise about love, a romance cliché, without clearly dispensing with the embedded social criticism that the whole film brings.

I still need to add the presentation of Yahya Abdul-Mateen II or the new Morpheus – Laurence Fishburne's role in the previous films. There was a certain fear on my part before watching the feature, which was decimated with each scene in which the actor appeared. Thus, the whole work is not a mere adaptation or imitation – a relief –, but an update of the legend. However, the utmost respect, Morpheus of Fishburne never will be.

Finally, Matrix 4 is not just a “Resurrection”, but an evolution that has not lost its concepts and essence. It is a new one that reinvented itself and tried not to cross the barriers of what would be appropriate for the plot and legacy – something that, despite the success and quality, the “Fast and Furious” franchise did, by the way.
