Harry Potter: Daniel Radcliffe takes a stand against JK Rowling's transphobic remarks

Daniel Radcliffe, actor responsible for playing Harry Potter from 2001 to 2011, openly positioned himself against the lines of JK Rowling, the author of the books that gave rise to the wizard's saga.

In an interview with IndieWire, Radcliffe spoke about his decision to take a stand against the writer's transphobic lines. At the time, the actor even published an open letter on The Trevor Project website, in which he reflects on his sexuality and defends the identification of transgender women or women.

“When we finished [filming] Harry Potter, I met so many queer and trans children and young people who had a huge identification with my character”, explained the eternal wizard about the decision to take a stand.

“And so, seeing them hurt that day, I wanted them to know that not everyone in the franchise felt that way. And that was really important,” continued Radcliffe. "I don't think I could look at myself in the mirror anymore if I hadn't done something about it."

JK Rowling has already been involved in several controversies for her prejudiced lines, but the most prominent ones were made on Twitter, when she used her official profile to promote a store that marketed products with phrases like “trans women are men”.

The writer, at another time, even said in an article that she was concerned about the possibility of trans women sexually abusing cisgender women in shared bathrooms.

In the letter, Daniel Radcliffe highlighted the need to respect the identity and dignity of transgender people. “To all those people who now feel that their experience of the ['Harry Potter'] books has been tarnished or diminished, I am deeply sorry for the pain these entries [by the author] have caused you. I really hope you don't entirely miss out on what was valuable in these stories,” he wrote.

Other members of the franchise, Tom Felton, who played Draco Malfoy, also took a stand against Rowling's lines.
