The series "House of the Dragon" premiered this Sunday, 21, and introduced several new characters to this universe.
The prequel series takes place approximately 200 years before the events of "Game of Thrones", and focuses on a great succession intrigue within House Targaryen, the sole dragon-bearers of the realm, who have roamed Westeros since Aegon I's Conquest.
o It is a production that takes place so many years before the original series, we have completely new characters, some being direct ancestors of others we met in “Game of Thrones”.
So, let's find out more about some of the main characters of “House of the Dragon” who were introduced in episode 1.
Viserys Targaryen
The name is pretty familiar, but the similarities between King Viserys I and Daenerys' brother in "Game of Thrones" don't go much beyond the names and blonde hair.
Viserys is king during the events of the series and is described as a kind and gentle man. He was chosen to ascend the Iron Throne during the Great Council of Harrenhal, ahead of his cousin, Princess Rhaenys, making the male lineage prevail.
But, Viserys himself defies this precedent by naming his only daughter, Rhaenyra, the heir, ahead of her brother, Daemon Targaryen, at the end of Episode 1.
Emma Targaryen
Despite carrying Targaryen blood and having acquired the name by marriage to her cousin, King Viserys, the queen is part of the Arryn family.
She is presented as a woman tired by a difficult pregnancy, but who is very attached to her duty to give her husband an heir, after several failed attempts. She fears for her daughter, Rhaenyra, who lives on her dragon.
Aemma's fate unfolds over the course of the episode, in the episode's most defining scene, which George RR Martin described as similar to the Red Wedding from "Game of Thrones".
Rhaenyra Targaryen
One of the main characters of the series, Rhaenyra is the eldest daughter of King Viserys I, and is named by him as heir, defying the laws and succession precedents of Westeros.
Rhaenyra is smart, determined and has a rebellious spirit. She rides her dragon, Syrax, despite her mother's displeasure. During the first episode, she appears worried about her mother, Aemma, and says she wants her father to have what he wants so much: a son.
She is on good terms with her uncle, Daemon Targaryen, and is best friends with Alicent Hightower.
Alicent High Tower
Princess Rhaenyra's friend Alicent is the daughter of Otto Hightower, the Hand of the King. In the first episode, she is presented as a kind character, who doesn't mind being in the background, and faithfully follows her father's footsteps. She will have a prominent role in the series.
Otto High Tower
The ambitious Otto Hightower occupies the position of the second most powerful man in the kingdom, the rank of Hand of the King. He is the second son in the succession of Hightower lords and is an intelligent and calculating man. He defends his own and his family's interests, and has a rivalry with Daemon Targaryen.
Daemon targaryen
The younger brother of King Viserys, Daemon Targaryen is impulsive, violent and ambitious. He sees himself as the king's heir, but part of the Small Council considers him a threat to the crown. In the first episode of the series, he ends up displeasing the king by calling his son, Baelon, "heir for a day".
Daemon rides the great dragon Caraxes, and is the errant of the City Watch, the Golden Cloaks, who are extremely loyal to him.
Rhaenys Velaryon
The “queen who never was”, Rhaenys Velaryon was the focus of the first scene of “House of the Dragon”, in which she ended up not being chosen as the heir of her father, Old King Jaehaerys, even though she is his eldest descendant and has a male child to maintain the lineage.
She is married to the Sea Serpent, Corys Velaryon, an ambitious and extremely powerful nobleman, who has Valyrian blood. Rhaenys is the mother of Laena and Laenor Velaryon.
Corys Velaryon
Coming from a family whose lineage runs close to the Targaryens, Corys Velaryon is known as the Sea Serpent, being a brilliant sailor who, in addition to being a member of the Small Council, which brings together the most powerful people in Westeros, is one of the richest men in the kingdom. and owns much of the royal fleet.
Extremely ambitious, Corys Velaryon defends the interests of his wife, Rhaenys, and his children, Laena and Laenor, seeking to put them back in succession to the Iron Throne.

Sor Criston Cole
Born a commoner, knight Criston Cole is of Dornish descent. He shines during the tournament joust in King's Landing and faces Prince Daemon Targaryen in the first episode of "House of the Dragon". Furthermore, he appears to have caught the attention of the young princess Rhaenyra Targaryen.
