1) What is my movie
What is my movie is a tool to help you find a movie if you don't know the name. It works machine learning and manages to combine your search with the metadata inserted in the database, thus generating the result. In addition, it supports voice search and the virtual assistant Alexa.
Here are some examples of what you can search for:
- Harry Potter Films;
- James Bond Films Sean Connery;
- Science fiction movies that take place in space.
In addition to these, you can search by character speech or by actor. In these cases, use quotation marks:
- “May the force be upon you” (quote from the movie 'Star Wars');
- “Julia Roberts”.

Although they claim that the tool is able to recognize lines from movies, it could not find the iconic “may the force be with you”.
2) InterFilmes
Another site to discover movies is InterFilmes. It's both a database for you to search for information on the actor, director or film, and a forum for other people to help you name the feature you're looking for. And the best part is being in Portuguese.
In the search tool you can enter the title, the year of production or the name of the actor. However, when I searched for the names of directors Steven Spielberg or Francis Ford Copolla, it did not return a profile or films directed by them.
In another part of the site, you will find the tool called “What is the movie?”. This is a forum where you can share a plot description and other people can respond to it. To reply or make a post, you need to register.
3) Databases on the internet
Internet databases are still the most popular way to find information about your favorite movies. Among them, you have the national and international IMDB.
I love cinema
Adorable Cinema is a Spanish website that allows you to search by movie, series or celebrity. Although simpler than IMDB, it offers an accessible service in Portuguese. But on the other hand, you have to know a word from the title or the person's name to be able to find the movie. That is, it does not work only plot.
IMDB
In the simple IMDB search, you can search by celebrity, title, series, studio or a keyword. Already in the advanced search, you find four different options, which I will explain below.
The first advanced search lets you select different filters to find a production. o, for example, Oscar-winning black and white films between 1950 and 1959.
Already in the advanced search by name you find ways to find celebrities. How about discovering people who used the word alopecia in their bio? Here, you can.
The third form of advanced search is to discover people who worked together or all the people who worked on two different productions. In the first case, you can discover the name of all the productions in which George Clooney and Brad Pitt worked together. In the second, you can search for people who worked on the same titles, for example 'Batman Returns' and 'Batman Forever'.
Finally, you can search for elements that appear in a plot, the “horse movies” and also find a movie by a phrase (the “may the force be with you”). This tool also lets you search by biography, quotes or questions on people's pages.

4) Catalogs of streaming platforms
All streaming platforms have a search tool. Although they are simple, they allow you to search by title, person or genre – this is the case with Netflix, Disney +, HBO Max and Prime Video. In the case of Star+, you can also search by team.
The good part is that it lets you find movie elements (the “horse”) or subjects (the “vacation”); however, the tool generally does not find “young drug addicts” or “romance in space”.
5) Online forums
Even though other tools have been created, many fans still turn to online forums to find other aficionados to help with tasks like figuring out the name of an old movie.
In Brazil, we have the forum “Cinema em Cena”, in which there is a topic “What is the name of the movie?” for you to post your question.

In addition to being a general subject search engine, Google can deliver several separate features. One of them is “What to watch”, which appears in searches about the cinematographic universe. This tool is useful for you who don't know how to find a movie on Google.
Examples of searches I performed that were successful were: “young drug addict movie”, “Adam Sandler comedy movie” and “true crime movie”. However, the query for “film where the main character dies” did not activate the “What to watch” feature and the search for “film about bank robbery Bruce Willis” provided productions the actor, but not just about bank robbery.
