Adam Sandler threatened director to include Brendan Fraser in film

Adam Sandler is an icon of the media, but he is also well known for his loyalty to friends and family in Hollywood. In a recent interview, the actor said he got into a fight with a director to cast Brendan Fraser in the 1994 film The Airheads.

Despite the negative reviews, The Heads-of-the-Wind is currently seen as a cult classic, starring Fraser, Sandler and Steve Buscemi, in addition to names like Chris Farley, Michael McKean, Judd Nelson and Ernie Hudson. But the feature came close to not having Adam Sandler, because, according to the actor, he got into a fight with director Michael Lehmann.

The Cabeças-de-Vento catches a band's attempt to succeed in an unconventional way: they decide to hijack a radio station, after its DJ refuses to play the band's songs. At the time, Brendan Fraser was not yet an acclaimed, Oscar-nominated actor, nor was he even the star of The Mummy.

Director Michael Lehmann, responsible for Airheads, was not convinced of Fraser's ability as an actor, after seeing his performance in the caveman in Encino Man, a feature film in 1992. But who was convinced was Adam Sandler, who was until the last consequences to include the colleague in the cast.

In a conversation between Adam Sandler, Brendan Fraser and Variety magazine, the actor revealed the threats made to the director of Os Cabeças-de-Vento. “Brendan, you were in a movie called The Airheads. Remember when I discovered you? You were just a kid. I stole you from Pauly [Shore] and said, 'Come here.'” Sandler said.

“Is that how it happened? Get out of here,” snapped Fraser. Sandler continued: “I thought, this guy shouldn't just be a caveman – he should be in a band. The director, Michael Lehmann, was very against you. He was like, 'I don't understand. I don't see the caveman in the movie.' And I just said, 'He can do other stuff, man.'

“I ended up going over to his house at 4 am, woke him up and said, 'All I know is Adam Sandler won't be in The Airheads unless old Fraser is in it.' Then he changed his tune," Sandler said, while Brendan Frase countered, "He flew to Chicago to meet me. He sang in a different key then.”

But Adam Sandler quipped, jokingly: “He's a filthy liar. He didn't want you. I wanted, and the rest is very good. You had a good life because of me.”
