Beyond “House of the Dragon”: Other “GoT” spinoffs that could come to life

“House of the Dragon” has been very successful as the first series derived from the acclaimed HBO series “Game of Thrones“. But there are other “GoT” spin-offs that are in development, as well as rumored ones.

And here's a spoiler of the text below: it's not just a series in the universe of "Game of Thrones" that is in development. Several spin-offs have already had confirmed development, even though most still do not have HBO authorization to start production.

a series that was one of the greatest successes in television history, breaking ratings records, and now caught up with the initial success of the first spin-off that left the drawing board, it is to be imagined that HBO wants to invest in new series of this universe.

Of course, not everything that starts development makes it to the small screen, but what we know here gives us an idea of what we can expect for the future of the “GoT” universe.

In addition to “House of the Dragon,” it has already been confirmed that HBO is developing a sequel focused on Kit Harington's character, Jon Snow. Author George RR Martin confirmed that the studio is working on the title “Snow” for the spin-off, and that the production will take place after the events of “Game of Thrones”, an idea by Harington himself.

The actor would return to live his character, Jon Snow, in this sequel, which is still in its early stages. If it leaves the paper, “Snow” would be the first sequel to the original series, the other spin-offs taking place before the events of “Game of Thrones”.

The Sea Snake

In March 2021, it was revealed that HBO would be developing other “Game of Thrones” spin-offs, including “The Sea Snake”, which was previously called “Nine Voyages”. The series was the one in the most advanced development, according to information at the time.

According to Martin, the change in the name of the series was due to the title of the production below, since HBO wanted to avoid two series in this universe that had numbers in the titles – “Nine Voyages” means “Nine Voyages”, while the translation of “Ten Thousand Ships” is “Ten Thousand Ships”.

This series would have focused on another well-known character, this time one that was introduced in “House of the Dragon”: Corlys Velaryon, the Sea Serpent, played by Steve Toussaint. It remains to be seen if Toussaint would play the character in "The Sea Snake", or if the series would pick up a younger version of the greatest sailor in the history of the Seven Kingdoms.

Bruno Heller ("The Mentalist"), who is reportedly pitching several ideas to HBO for "Game of Thrones" spin-offs including a prequel based on Robert's Rebellion, was in charge of writing the series' pilot.

Ten Thousand Ships

Another project in development at HBO is the oldest in the timeline of the “Game of Thrones” universe. Taking place about a thousand years before the original series, the spin-off would follow Princess Nymeria, ancestor of House Martell who founded Dorne.

Nymeria is one of the most iconic figures in the history of Westeros, characters like Arya (Maisie Williams) idealizing her – including naming her direwolf after her. According to Martin, the title of the prelude at the moment is “Ten Thousand Ships”.

The name is a reference to the military maneuver in which Nymeria had her entire fleet burned after her army traveled from Essos to Dorne. The goal? Make returning not an option. Martin also revealed that Amanda Segel is the series' showrunner, and that she has already submitted drafts of the series' scripts.

The Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

HBO is also reportedly developing a series based on George RR Martin's book "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms," about knight Ser Duncan the Tall (or Dunk) and his squire Egg.

This prequel takes place between “House of the Dragon” and “Game of Thrones”, and is under the direction of Steve Conrad. “He's determined to do a faithful adaptation of the stories, which is exactly what I want; these characters and stories are very precious to me,” Martin said on his blog. “The first season will be an adaptation of the first short story, The Hedge Knight.”

"Contrary to what you may have read online, the series will not be called Dunk & Egg, which could be mistaken for a comedy by viewers unfamiliar with the stories," Martin explained. At the moment, HBO works the title “Knight of the Seven Kingdoms”, “The Knight in Ward” also in consideration.

Rumor: Flea Bottom

An unconfirmed series that would be in development would be one set in Baixada das Pulgas, according to rumors about “GoT” spin-offs. The place is on the outskirts of King's Landing, where the poorest residents of Westeros' capital reside. There is no further information revealed about this possible series.

Robert's Rebellion Series

There are neither rumors nor confirmation that a series about the events that brought Robert Baratheon to the Iron Throne is in development. However, as mentioned above in the topic about “The Sea Snake”, Bruno Heller, who is responsible for the series about Corlys Velaryon, gave the idea to HBO to create a series about this event that happened a few decades before “Game of Thrones”. .

So, you can't completely rule out that a series about Robert's Rebellion could happen in the future.

animated series

“I'm not allowed to talk about most of what's going on, except to say things are moving really fast, and I love love love some of the concept art I'm looking at,” said George RR Martin on his blog about “ The Golden Empire” (The Golden Empire, in free translation), future animated series of “GoT”.

“Word leaked out several months ago that one of the animated series would be set in Yi Ti. That's true. Our working title is 'The Golden Empire', and we also have a great young writer, and I think the art and animation will be beautiful. I would tell more if I could. I don't think I can say a word about the other animated series. Not yet."

bloodmoon

Among the potential spin-offs of “Game of Thrones”, a series that we already know will not get off the ground is “Bloodmoon”. The series would take place during the period known as "The Long Night", which took place about XNUMX years before "Game of Thrones".

The development of the series was complicated, after all George RR Martin wrote only a few sentences throughout his entire work about the period. The author himself admitted difficulties in development. “Bloodmoon was a very difficult task. We're dealing with much more primitive people. There are no dragons yet,” explained Martin.

Jane Goldman, the showrunner of the series, insisted and HBO created a pilot episode that cost US$ 30 million, one of the most expensive ever created in history. Naomi Watts guest starred in the episode, which revolved around a wedding involving a member of a Southern House and a Northern House.

However, despite the amount spent, HBO canceled the project in 2019, and the pilot project was "locked" on the studio's servers, not even George RR Martin being able to watch.
