“Grey's Anatomy”: Why did Katherine Heigl, Izzie Stevens, leave the series?

Those who watch Grey's Anatomy are already used to the tragedies and departures of several characters, whether they are protagonists or not – which makes the series a box of surprises. However, in addition to the sad departure of Patrick Dempsey (Derek Shepherd), there is one other farewell that fans never understood or got over, and that was the sudden departure of Katherine Heigl, Dr. Izzie Stevens.

Heigl has been part of the main cast since the beginning of Grey's Anatomy. She became one of the favorite characters, especially after engaging in a romance with heart patient Denny Duquette Jr. (played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and also living a relationship with Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) – who also just left the series after 16 seasons.

The actress even won the Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 2007, however, after her highlight, conflicts between her and the creators of the program began to become public, causing tension in the recordings and several rumors. Thus, in season 6 Heigl left the series after her character went through some crises and post-death experience after discovering cancer. In the end, she was fired from the famous Gray Sloan Memorial Hospital for administering an incorrect dosage to a patient.

Only in the 16th season of the series, however, the show decides to put an end to the character, as it is revealed that she still works as a surgeon in Kansas and had twin children from her former partner Karev – in the past they had frozen embryos in a fertility clinic. So, after Karev discovers the children of his former girlfriend, he leaves his current one, Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington) and decides to live with Izzie and the children – thus finally giving the couple a happy ending.

Why did Izzie leave Grey's Anatomy?

According to information from CBR, the main reason for Izzie Stevens to be dismissed from the show was the difficult relationship with the creative team, since the actress made some statements that irritated the production, in addition to having refused to participate in the 2008 Emmy Awards saying that she had no received material that warranted an Emmy nomination. After that, she became known as the “difficult” in the film market and two years later she left the series.

On another occasion, the actress even said that she apologized to the creator of the series, Shonda Rimes, and explained that her lines were misinterpreted, since she refused the award for not feeling good about her own performance, which corroborates the book “ How to Save a Life: The Inside Story of Grey's Anatomy", released by Lynette Rice and released by TODAY, in which the writer reveals behind-the-scenes stories and tells that the real reason for the actress' departure was the arrival of her first adopted child, the which explains Izzie's temporary absence at the start of the season.

“I started a family, and that changed everything,” she said. “It changed my desire to work full time. I went on family leave and just became a mother, and it changed my whole perspective… That was really the turning point. So, before I went back, I spoke to Shonda again about wanting to leave. So I waited at home until I got the formal OK that I was off the show," Heigl explained to the book.

“And I wanted to make it clear that I wasn't snubbing the Emmys. The night I won was the highlight of my career. I was just afraid that if I said, 'No entries', it would come out if I couldn't be bothered (to enter the race)…I could have said it more gracefully without getting into a private work matter. It was between me and the writers. I ambushed them, and it wasn't very nice or fair."

The artist also noted the way the industry treats women's opinions, stigmatizing and sometimes distorting their expressions. At the time, the rumors that gained strength due to her departure were that the actress wanted to dedicate herself to the silver screen and grow her career in cinema.

“The 'ungrateful' thing is what annoys me the most”, he revealed. “And this is my fault. I allowed myself to be perceived that way. A lot about living life, for me, is about humility and gratitude. And I've tried so hard to have those qualities and be that person, and I'm so disappointed in myself for letting that slip away. Of course I'm grateful. what not to be?… [but] In this town, women who don't just say 'OK, yes sir, yes ma'am' start to gain a reputation for being difficult. I've decided it's not worth pushing this on me."

After her departure from Grey's Anatomy, Katherine Heigl appeared in some iconic films, 2009's “The Nude and Crua Truth”, 2010's “Perfect Match”, and 2013's “Wedding of the Year”.
