GTA Movie Starring Eminem Didn't Happen for a Reason

The world was close to having a film in the GTA universe starring Eminem. Production just didn't happen because Sam Houser, president of Rockstar (studio responsible for the game), didn't believe in the project's potential.

To the Bugzy Malone podcast, the director of the Earthworm film studio, Kirk Ewing, revealed that conversations about a possible long game took place after the release of GTA 3, in 2001. Tony Scott, director of “Top Gun”, was quoted to the direction.

“I remember getting a call around 4 am from one of the producers in Los Angeles with an offer to do a movie,” Ewing said. “And he said, 'Kirk, we've got Eminem to star, and it's a Tony Scott movie. $5 million. Are you interested?” he added.

With the offer of a GTA universe movie in hand, Ewing called Houser to break the news. The president of Rockstar, however, denied the proposal.

“[Rockstar] realized that the game franchise they had was bigger than any movie that was happening at the time,” explained the director of Earthworm.

Video game adaptations are a thing in Hollywood. The most recent case is the new HBO Max series, “The Last of Us”, a PlayStation success. Will we ever see GTA on movie screens?
