Post-credits scene of “Spider-Man: Homecoming” lost its meaning; understand

The movie “Spider-Man: Homecoming”, released in 2017, has two post-credits scenes, something unique in Marvel productions. But, while one of the scenes was just a joke involving Captain America, the other one hinted at the future of the MCU. The problem is that it has lost its meaning since then.

WARNING: The text below contains spoilers for the MCU's "Spider-Man" trilogy.

The scene in question appears in the middle of the film's credits, and shows Adrian Toomes, the Vulture (Michael Keaton), in prison after, some time after the events of "Spider-Man: Homecoming". As he walks down the prison corridor, the Vulture is confronted by a former associate of his, who has a tattoo of a scorpion on his neck, which indicates that he could turn out to be the villainous Scorpion in the future.

The man appears to want to know the identity of "Spider-Man", and says that he knows that Toomes/the Vulture has knowledge of who Spider-Man is. And this is true, Toomes knows that Peter Parker is Spider-Man, the one introduced in the final third of the film. However, the Vulture does not tell Peter that he is Spider-Man, which indicates that he himself wanted revenge on the Friend of the Neighborhood.

The scene made it clear that the man who would potentially be Scorpion, played by Michael Mando, wanted revenge on Spider-Man. However, the chances of seeing Scorpion seeking this revenge significantly diminished the ending of “Spider-Man: Never Go Home”.

This is because Dr. Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) casts a spell that makes the entire world forget who Peter Parker is... which includes the vengeful Scorpion in prison. So, in addition to creating profound consequences for Peter and his friends, who now don't know who he is, Dr. Strange also eliminates Scorpion's quest for revenge, which makes the scene completely lose its meaning.

“Spider-Man: Homecoming” is available on Netflix, Disney+ and Prime Video via Lionsgate+.
