Why was Adam Driver hesitant to accept the role of Kylo Ren?

Why was Adam Driver hesitant to accept the role of Kylo Ren?

It's true that when Adam Driver accepted the role of Kylo Ren, not many people were entirely convinced that he would make a perfect antagonist. And oddly enough, the list of "Star Wars" fans who were reluctant to accept him in the role of the character in "The Force Awakens" includes the actor himself.

When presented to the public, the villain of the last trilogy of “Star Wars” drew attention, both for good and for evil, for his characteristics different from the other antagonists of the universe of the film. He didn't look like a demon like Darth Maul, or have the deformed face of Palpatine, much less was his grandfather, Darth Vader, half human and half machine. He was “just” a normal human with a lot of concentrated hate and… awesome straight hair.

Fans' concerns were also Adam Driver's. For breaking the pattern of villains, the actor was hesitant to accept the role of Kylo Ren. When reading the script and talking to the directors, however, the American realized that the character's actions were as cruel as those of his grandfather and, therefore, decided to bring Darth Vader's grandson to life.

“Just because people can redo something or revisit a world doesn't necessarily mean they should. I've seen a lot of bigger budget movies that sacrifice characters and stories for the spectacle and I had no idea what would happen. But the first words out of JJ Abrams' mouth were about character and story. It was all very cool, but even so you have doubts”, said the actor.

“Can I live up to that? I'm a fan of the movies and I didn't want to spoil it in any way. However, because I was afraid, maybe it was a good reason to do this ”, he pleaded.

Even fearful and full of doubts, we can say that Adam Driver fulfilled his mission of making a villain full of anguish and as evil as the others. And if we analyze that Ren killed his own father and one of the most beloved characters of all time, Han Solo, his "villaininess" may even put him at the top of the list of most cruel antagonists of "Star Wars".
