Netflix's new political drama, "Anatomy of a Scandal", has been drawing attention because the plot of the series seems to have been lifted straight from real-life newspapers.


The series was created by David E. Kelley, of “Big Little Lies” and starts the politician James Whitehouse (Rupert Friend) involved in a scandal. He ends up accused of sexual misconduct, after experiencing an affair with co-worker Olivia Lytton (Naomi Scott).

His wife, Sophie Whitehouse (Sienna Miller), slowly unravels everything. And she ends up divided between believing the story her husband told, or the young woman's version. In all, the miniseries is set for six episodes full of mystery and suspense.

Is “Anatomy of a Scandal” based on true events?

Despite appearances pointing to something we could certainly see in real life, the story told in “Anatomy of a Scandal” is fictional and is based on a book of the same name published in 2018, by author Sarah Vaughan.

However, the impression that these are real facts has a grain of truth. Despite being a work of fiction, the author confirmed that her book draws great inspiration from her many years working as a political journalist and court reporter. There, she covered several high-profile cases and political scandals, and that experience certainly added a dose of realism to her book – and the series that adapted it.

“While the courts and murder investigations helped me write a thriller, it was in becoming a political correspondent that I became even more aware of power, privilege and entitlement – ​​all issues at the heart of 'Anatomy of a Scandal',” stated Vaughan in an interview with the Waterstones. “I also saw how sex scandals involving politicians broke out and unfolded.”


“Anatomy of a Scandal” is available on the Netflix streaming platform.
