Devil turns hand into claw; Is body modification bad for health?

Tattoo artist Michel Praddo, better known as the 'Devil', showed his Instagram followers the result of his latest body modification. He brought his index and middle fingers together after removing his ring finger, as did his nose, ears and nipples.

“The initial idea was to 'open' the hand after removing the ring finger. It would be a fork from the index finger to the middle of the hand, but we understood that it would not turn out the way I wanted. My wife researched the 'joined fingers' and, in the end, I was even more satisfied with the result”, he said to G1.

Diabão's wife, body modifier Carol Praddo, also known as 'Woman 'Demônia', was responsible for the procedure. “She prepared and studied a lot about the anatomy of the hand”, pleaded Diabão.

Body modification is bad for health?

The plastic and oncological surgeon Wandemberg Barbosa, who works in hospitals in the capital of São Paulo, Albert Einstein and Nove de Julho, said that surgeries of this type go against the physiology of the body and, generally, are carried out based on adolescent desires, which increase the chances of regrets.

“I'm against this type of surgery because you stop something 'antiphysiological' that is normally a call of a stage of life (adolescence). Afterwards, the adult individual regrets it and the patient rushes to have the surgery reversed”, said the doctor to the Technology Refugee in a special matter on body modifications.

On the other hand, the body piercer Acacia Britto Winter, who has a forked tongue, several piercings, reamers and countless tattoos, says that there is a protocol to perform the procedures. In addition, after-process care is as important as the piercing itself, something that is the client's responsibility.

“We deal with it as if it were a surgical bench, sterilized material, and most of it is disposable. There is a whole protocol that comes from opening the material in front of the client so that he is sure that it is being used (for the first time) by him and that it will also be discarded. All material must be sterilized and the minimum must be reused”, said the body piercer, giving the example of tweezers, the only tools she reuses – and after cleaning and sterilization.

Acacia also gave tips on finding a trusted professional to perform the procedures. The first point, according to her, is field research, that is, talking about who already has the modifications.

“Talk! But not the friend you saw on the internet, talk about who has the modifications, professionals who have already done it and who work on it. A professional who doesn't pay attention to (doubts about) body modification procedures, I no longer qualify him as a good professional, because he will involve you only in a moment of intimacy, but support is needed long before the piercing because he will be part of one of the most important moments of his life.”
