New horror film causes audiences to vomit and faint; understand

The horror film “Aterrorizante 2” (“Terrifier 2”, in English) has not yet arrived in Spanish cinemas, but it premiered in the United States in October, and has been causing surprise for its good performance at the box office.

Writer-director Damien Leone's bloody sequel to his 2016 killer clown cult hit shocked the industry by grossing more than expected, and has already racked up more than $10 million at the box office. As much as the value seems low compared to box office successes, “Terrorizante 2” is an independent film with a budget of US$ 250 thousand and very little investment in promotion.

But, at the end of the day, what is generating interest in “Scary 2”? It may have something to do with all the reports claiming that the horror movie caused several viewers to leave the theater, pass out or vomit in the middle of the film.

Photos of spectators in wheelchairs receiving medical attention outside a screening of "Scary 2" have gone viral on social media, turning the bloody sequence into something of an endurance test for horror movie fans. The reason for vomiting and fainting, according to reports, is the explicit violence present in the feature, amplified by the good quality and execution of the scenes.

“Look, I would love to have some outings, I think it's kind of a badge of honor because it's an intense movie,” Damien Leone recently told Entertainment Weekly about the reaction to the film. “I don't want people to pass out, get hurt during the movie. But it's surreal.”

He continued, explaining that audiences should be prepared for this: “Here's the thing, it's called 'Scary 2'. You should probably see 'Terrifying 1' before jumping to this one. If you see “Terrifying 1″, you'll know what you're getting into. There's a now notorious murder scene, a saw scene, in Part I that everyone is talking about,” said Leone.

“We tried to rival that scene [in the new film] because the really supportive fan base that we've had this whole time, that really started to put [villain Art the Clown] on a pedestal, I mean, those are the things they really want. I think this movie is more accessible, but essentially we're still making these movies for them, and if other people want to participate, the more the merrier."

There are reports that “Scary 2” ends on a cliffhanger, which means that Leone is expected to return to theaters in the future for a third installment of his bloody horror film franchise.

The film opens in theaters in Brazil on December 29.
