“Dune: Part 2”: Director gives new details about the film

“Dune” has had the talk among fans of the science fiction genre, and anticipation for “Dune: Part 2” already kicks off as soon as the credits roll on the first film.

The sequel has been getting off the ground since Warner Bros. authorized the adaptation of the second part of the adaptation of the science fiction epic by Frank Herbert, following the success of “Dune”, which was nominated for an Oscar and a BAFTA. “Dune: Part 2” is scheduled for release in October 2023, but not many details have yet been released.

Now, in an interview with Empire magazine, Denis Villeneuve, director of the film, updated fans on the progress of the second film. “We should record there towards the end of the summer [which ends in June in the northern hemisphere]. I will say that most of it is projected. The thing that helps us at the moment is that it's the first time I've revisited a universe,” Villeneuve said.

“So I'm working the same team, everybody knows what to do, we know what this is going to look like. The movie will be more challenging, but we know where we're going. And the script is written. So I feel confident. Frankly, the only big unknown for me right now is the pandemic,” explained the director.

The decision to split the first book in the "Dune" series into two films offered Villeneuve more time to establish the universe, but some difficult decisions had to be made in the first film. Now, in the sequel, there's a chance to bring in certain things that were left out.

“When you adapt, you have to make bold choices for things to come to life. And I think that was the best way to introduce this world to a wide audience,” explained Villeneuve. “Now in the second one, I want to have more flexibility, and it will be possible to go a little deeper into some of these details.”

These details include the introduction of Feyd-Rautha characters, the focus of the story shifting to characters who played a minor role in "Dune: Part 1". "It's like a chess game," stopped the director. “Some new characters will be introduced in the second part and a decision I made earlier was that this first part would be more about Paul Atreides and the Bene Gesserit, and his experience of being in touch for the first time with a different culture. The second part, there will be a lot more Harkonnen stuff.”

Finally, Denis Villeneuve told what it's like for him to be part of this film. “I just want to have that experience, be there, every moment of it. When I record a movie, I record all my movies, as if it were the last one. I will do the same for Part 2.”
