“Harry Potter” for adults? Netflix's new wizarding series takes center stage

This week, Netflix welcomes a new British fantasy series focused on wizards, which has been described as "Harry Potter for adults".

The series in question is called “The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself”, and received the title in Portuguese of “O Filho Bastardo do Diabo”. The production has been receiving great feedback from critics, although Netflix series aimed at young-adult audiences are, in general, mixed.

According to critics, “O Filho Bastardo do Diabo” has been standing out from other streaming series for its style and personality, and the way it reads the original material. This is because the production is based on the “Half Bad” trilogy by Sally Green.

"The Bastard Son of the Devil" picks up a 16-year-old boy named Nathan (Jay Lycurgo), the son of the most feared wizard in the world. In the universe of the series, wizards gain their powers at the age of 17, and Nathan's birthday approaching, the so-called "good" wizards fear that he will become evil with his father. Also, just like in "Harry Potter", a frightening prophecy explains everything.

Despite everything so far sounding close to “Harry Potter”, the script for the series was written by Joe Barton, known for the thriller series “Giri/Haji”, for the drama series “The Lazarus Project” and for the horror film “The Ritual ”, which pulls the production towards a more adult audience.

“[Barton's experience and his] background in more 'adult' [productions] than a series of teenage wizards gives 'The Bastard Son of the Devil' a sharp edge (as seen in the title) that sets it apart from the herd. of fantasy TV series flooded into streaming right now,” said the Radio Times review.

"It would be fair to jump to conclusions and say there's no need for another fantasy series about young people finding their way in the world," the review continues. “But Barton shows off his scripts, snappy dialogue and well-thought-out mechanics to keep everything fresh enough to stand out from the hegemony.”

The Telegraph called the series a "Harry Potter [adult rating]". In addition, the British newspaper for “The Bastard Son of the Devil” series the “Sex Education” and “Skins” in the way it handles young adult themes. “This is a show about profanity, blood and sex,” concludes the review of Netflix's new wizarding series.

“As far as young adult dramas go, 'The Bastard Son' has the style, personality and ideas […] to resonate with audiences and avoid becoming another cancellation victim, which has been the case with so many other similar series” , The Uping's review declares.

“The Bastard Son of the Devil” premieres on Netflix this Friday (28).
