Hayden Christensen on Anakin Skywalker Role: "I Was Sad When It Ended"

Hayden Christensen on Anakin Skywalker Role:

Actor Hayden Christensen said he loved playing Anakin Skywalker in the "Star Wars" prequel trilogy so much, he didn't want to stop.

The statement was made in an interview with Total Film, where Christensen stated his love for the role of the tragic character who lived in the 2000s. “The experience of making the prequels was phenomenal”, said the actor.

“I mean, working George Lucas and playing this character, I couldn't have dreamed better. I didn't want it to end. It was a sad thing when it ended. At the time, I thought that was it. I thought George had told his story, and my journey with the character was complete.”

However, the actor will return to live Anakin Skywalker – and Darth Vader – in the Disney+ series “Obi-Wan Kenobi”. The live-action takes place 10 years after Episode III, "Revenge of the Sith". “After all these years, to go back and continue my journey with this character, it's so cool and extremely meaningful to me,” concluded Christensen.

The story of Anakin Skywalker continued in “Star Wars: The Clone Wars”, an animated series that shows the events between episode 2, “Attack of the Clones”, and 3, “Revenge of the Sith”. However, Christensen did not return to voice the character in animation, and Matt Lanter filled the role for seven seasons.

Despite not having participated in the series, Hayden Christensen said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that he had watched “The Clone Wars” and “Rebels”, in addition to reviewing all the films to prepare to return to live Anakin. "It was interesting. They made these characters a lot in these series. And they explored the relationship further. There were interesting things to learn. It was so much fun to go back and re-immerse yourself in this world that continues to grow and become more and more vast.”

Despite having lived Anakin Skywalker in theaters, Hayden Christensen had little time using the Darth Vader costume, only doing so in the final moments of the last film in the prequel trilogy. But now he will have the opportunity in "Obi-Wan Kenobi".

“Well, without going into too much detail, it was amazing. It is a great honor to be able to wear this costume. It was mostly just a lot of excitement because I'd spent enough time with this character and felt like I knew him, and coming back to that felt very natural in a lot of ways. And I was really excited to jump in and play Darth Vader at this point in the timeline, because it felt like a natural continuation of his journey as the character. And that was very meaningful to me.”
