“King Richard”: Serena Williams wants to create a cinematic universe

After all the success of “King Richard: Creating Champions”, tennis player Serena Williams wants the film to be the beginning of a cinematographic universe.

The film earned actor Will Smith the Best Actor award at the 2022 Oscar for his performance in the role of Richard Williams, father of tennis players Serena and Venus Williams. “King Richard: Raising Champions”, as the film's title implies, retells the story of the Williams sisters, from their pton training to becoming two of the most dominant tennis players in history.

The film full of motivational elements was produced by the Williams sisters and they had their opinions on how the story would be told taken into account. However, Serena Williams recently stated in an interview with Insider that she hopes the cinematic story of the female tennis players' emergence into the world's tennis elite doesn't end up focusing on the family patriarch.

Serena Williams hints that she believes "King Richard" served as the perfect origin story and platform to launch a series of films focusing on the separate trajectories of Venus and Serena, a true cinematic universe for the Williams sisters. As much as the two started together, winning several championships together, both had incredible solo careers.

“'King Richard' had a perfect ending to Venus on the tennis court,” said Williams, referring to the ending of the film, which shows Venus in her first professional tournament. “Venus goes towards her, and I go towards me. They are two completely different stories,” said Serena.

About her own story, the tennis player reflected on what it would be like to show her battles against a lot of adversity she faces. “I've had a tough journey. I didn't do well, and then I did well. It's a lot of drama. It's a telenovela,” she stated.

“King Richard: Raising Champions” is available on the HBO Max streaming platform.
