'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood': Tarantino reveals scene that DiCaprio improvised

Director Quentin Tarantino, who recently said he considers "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" to be his best work, spoke about an improvised scene by Leonardo DiCaprio in the 2019 film.

In the film, Leonardo DiCaprio lives the TV actor Rick Dalton, who finds it difficult to find himself in Hollywood at the end of the 1960s, his career in decline. After being cast as a villain in a western pilot, Rick forgets his lines on set, and has a meltdown in his trailer.

In an interview with the 2 Bears 1 Cave podcast, Tarantino said that this specific scene was created to be an improvisation. “What happened was I knew I wanted to have that scene, but I didn't want to write it. I didn't want it to be dialogue that he remembered," said the director.

“So I called Leo and I said, 'So here's what I want to do: I want you to come in after you've screwed up on set not knowing your lines and I want you to come in the trailer and be this crazy, total rage at me. himself, a hate party, a full blown tantrum against himself. Just a gigantic pity party where you just totally lose yourself, but against yourself, nobody else. And I want it to have the randomness of an improvisation, that it just comes out of you,'” explained the director.

Tarantino continued: “Now, what I did was I gave him different subjects that he could complain about. 'Here's a subject, here's a subject, here's something you could say.' And he said, 'Great.' He was a little nervous. It was actually really sweet that he was nervous that day because it's up to him and he knows it. So we're shooting this scene and I'm right next to the camera and we just do a few different takes and it was great. And then, every now and then, if I thought he'd run out of something, I might throw something his way."

The film ended up becoming a huge success, and did well in the awards season, a total of 10 Oscar nominations and a win for Best Motion Picture Musical or Musical at the Golden Globes. Later, Quentin Tarantino published a book with the same name as the film, which picks up Rick and Cliff (Brad Pitt's character).

“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” is available on Netflix.
