“The Expendables 4”: why Arnold Schwarzenegger will not participate in the film?

When “The Expendables” was released in 2010, the hype around the film was huge, as the feature featured a strong cast and promised even more old-school action with the arrival of Arnold Schwarzenegger. Indeed, the franchise became a success, and saw Schwarzenegger officially join Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham in 2's "The Expendables 2012".

However, the famous actor known for his role in “The Terminator” revealed that he prefers not to return to the fourth sequel to the production, which has even won a release date during CinemaCon this year; “The Expendables 4” hits theaters on February 9, 2023.

Why does Schwarzenegger not want to do “The Expendables 4”?

When rumors indicated the possibility of Stallone leaving the franchise – in addition to the lead role in the saga, he also acts as writer and director – Schwarzenegger signaled to Entertainment Weekly that he “would never do the film without him”, since in his opinion, “there is no Expendables without Sly [Stallone].” However, even though Stallone decided to continue – this being his farewell – the actor signaled that he preferred to leave and explained that he did not like the way his character was treated in the last film.

“You know, I think the first and second were great. But by the third, I thought my part wasn't well written. It wasn't doing well in the movie either, as far as I was concerned. Maybe other people believed differently. But I didn't believe it had any value in the film. By the way, I love the franchise. I think The Expendables is a spectacular franchise. I think Sly has good ideas and what he wants to do with it, and I think if they wrote a really good script [in] which my part was really well fleshed out, I would. If not, then I wouldn't," said the actor in 2017, when the fourth sequel was teased.

Schwarzenegger had a brief cameo in 2010's "The Expendables" as he was still the governor of California at the time. Afterwards, he entered the franchise permanently in 2012 and was also in “The Expendables 3”, from 2014 – which he mentions not having liked the way Thrench Mauser (his character) was handled.

Thus, “Os Mercenário 4” will not have, for now, the presence of the actor. Terry Crews is also not returning to the franchise. The film, however, announced the arrival of new characters, Megan Fox and 50 Cent, in addition to the return of Stallone, Statham, Dolph Lundgren (Gunner) and Randy Couture (Toll Road).
