'The Jetsons' turns 58; see some of the predictions set by the series

Exactly 58 years ago, on September 23, 1962, 'The Jetsons' premiered on the ABC network in the United States. Around here, the program arrived the following year, 1963, on the programming schedule of the extinct TV Excelsior.

The drawing portrays a family that lives in a fictional and futuristic place called Orbit City. Set in the year 2062, the series shows creators William Hanna and Joseph Barbera envisioning the future.

We were introduced to flying vehicles, cities that float, jobs completely done by machines and even a robot maid, who was named Rosie and was responsible for taking care of the family's children and doing housework.

In its debut, the show had only 24 episodes. However, due to the success, the series was relaunched with new chapters, which were produced between 1984 and 1987. The big milestone reached by the Jetsons is that this was the first color broadcast by ABC in a time when few companies had invested in this technology.

Technologies predicted by the Jetsons

In addition to being a milestone for the era of color transmissions, 'Os Jetsons' also became known for showing some technologies that, despite being modified in some cases, are present in our daily lives.

  • Video calls

At various times, the family makes video calls to unite members who are far away. For us, this looks like something quite one, mainly equipment that facilitates this unication, the computers and smartphones.

  • Tablet

In the morning, every time George Jetson went to consume news, he would sit in front of a screen to do so. This is precisely the concept used today in tablets. People use them as ways to read what happened around the world.

  • Personal assistant

During the drawing, it was quite a sight to see Elroy, one of the Jetsons' sons, doing his homework. At these times, he was talking to a personal assistant who helped him solve mathematical problems. This behavior is not very different from what we see today with software such as Alexa, Siri and the Google Assistant. Just ask a question and the answer comes right away.

  • Robot cleaning the house

In the cartoon, we saw Rosie constantly cleaning the family home. However, at the time, this was inconceivable. Today, we have some alternatives for this, as is the case of the iRobot Roomba, which, despite not helping to take care of the children, manages to map the environment to carry out a more effective cleaning.

  • Flat screen tv

While some of the television sets shown on the show are similar to those seen in the 1960s – big tubes – others hinted at a trend quite unique today: big screens and flat designs.
