Timeline for 'The Fast and the Furious': what is the order of the films?

About to return to theaters the new chapter hitting theaters around the world this week, 'Fast and Furious' can have a confusing chronology for the less attentive. After all, the chronology of the franchise started 20 years ago does not follow the order in which the films were released. We organize, below, the sequence of events of the saga, for you to marathon before the premiere of 'Fast and Furious 9'. Check out the trailer:

See the order

  • 'The Fast and the Furious' (2001)
  • '+ Fast + Furious' (2003)
  • 'Fast and Furious 4' (2009)
  • 'The Fast and the Furious 5: Operation Rio' (2011)
  • 'Fast and Furious 6' (2013)
  • 'The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Challenge' (2006)
  • 'Fast and Furious 7′ (2015)
  • 'Fast and Furious 8′ (2017)
  • 'Hobbs & Shaw' (2019)

In short, the film that “breaks” the chronology of releases is 'Tokyo Challenge' (2006), one of the most beloved among fans of the series and also one of those responsible for rekindling the spirit around the franchise. The second film, '+ Fast + Furious' (2003), had to deal with the absence of rising star Vin Diesel – one of the protagonists of the first feature -, and, to be fair, the script is not exactly a masterpiece.

Later in the timeline, new characters and set in another country, 'Tokyo Drift' was an attempt to revitalize the franchise and became a fundamental piece in the films' timeline. The first point of chronological confusion arises in 'Fast and Furious 4', which has Han (Sung Kang) in the cast, and the character dies in the feature released immediately before, in a car accident.

Without an explicit indication that 'Tokyo Challenge' takes place further ahead, Han's presence in the fourth film made part of the audience a knot in the head. And the character's return in the ninth and latest film in the saga could make things even more confusing.

Han's life and death

Han's death was explored in other chapters of the Fast and the Furious saga. In the seventh film's post-credit scene, we saw that the pilot was actually murdered by Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham). After the villain was converted into a good guy, many fans questioned the decision of those responsible for the franchise to include Statham, Toretto's ally (Vin Diesel).

Han's return in 'The Fast and the Furious 9', and his consequent non-death, should ease the effect of the presence of an alleged assassin on Toretto's team and perhaps ultimately redeem former villain Deckard Shaw.
