The medical series “Grey's Anatomy” has already reached an impressive 19 seasons, and with each new renewal, it is speculated whether actress Ellen Pompeo, who plays the main character of the series, Meredith Grey, will continue in the role. Now, the moment of goodbye has finally arrived.
“Grey's Anatomy” airs since 2005 on the American network ABC. Pompeo plays the protagonist of the series since the first episode, which premiered on March 27, 2005. The vast majority of actors from the original cast have left the production over the years. Only Pompeo (Meredith), Chandra Wilson (Miranda Bailey) and James Pickens Jr. (Richard Webber) have participated in all seasons of the series so far.

Now, according to information from Deadline, the premiere of the second part of the 19th season, which will take place in the United States on February 23rd, will mark the episode in which Meredith Gray will leave the series.
The information was confirmed by a promotional video for the return of “Grey's Anatomy” after the hiatus. In it, it is highlighted that “Meredith leaves Seattle”, images of an apparent farewell party for the doctor.
Meredith's departure from the series will apparently be less dramatic than that of some characters on the series, her husband, Derek Shepherd, who died in the story after Patrick Dempsey wished to leave the medical series. Several other characters had similar fates after the actors left the production.
Others, Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh), took the same path Meredith must take: leaving Seattle behind and continuing her career elsewhere. In the case of Meredith, apparently this will happen in Boston, where she must move her daughter Zola (Aniela Gumbs), after receiving a proposal to work with Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams), another character who left the main list to appear only as eventually invited.
The episode will have the title “I'll Follow the Sun”, or “I will Follow the Sun”, in free translation. Pompeo's departure is prompted by the actress' own desire to cut her season 19 appearances down to just eight episodes, which includes an appearance in the season finale.
Despite the departure, Pompeo will not leave the series completely behind. Though Pompeo is starring in and producing an eight-episode limited series for Hulu about a Midwestern couple who adopt a child with a rare form of dwarfism, she will continue to narrate all episodes in Season 19 and may continue to do so in future seasons.
Pompeo will also remain on the production as an executive producer. other characters making appearances after her departure throughout the series, including Williams, it may be likely that Meredith could return in future seasons as well.
But, does Ellen Pompeo's exit, “Grey's Anatomy” continue? The answer might be yes. Recently, the series has begun to focus on the new group of inmates introduced at the start of the season. While renewal talks have yet to start for a 20th season of television's longest-running medical drama, the positive reception to the new characters could see another season in development soon.
If that happens, contracts will also have to be renewed by ABC Signature for many of the actors, including the last two remaining original cast members, Chandra Wilson (Dr. Miranda Bailey) and James Pickens Jr. (Dr. Richard Webber).
The first 18 seasons of “Grey's Anatomy” are available on Star+. The 19th season arrives in Brazil exclusively on the Sony Channel in January 2023, premiere on Star+ date not yet defined.
