In addition to Wandinha: know the biggest secret of the origin of the Addams Family

The growing interest in the Addams Family caused by the Netflix series Wandinha has brought to light stories about the famous characters of Charles Addams. One of these stories involves a gigantic painting, which ended up hidden in a university library.

In 1952, Charles Addams, at the height of his cartooning skills, painted a lush monochrome mural on canvas for a bar on the Dune Deck, a hotel in the Hamptons. The work is almost four meters long and more than one and a half meters high.

When the hotel changed hands, the new owners – one of them a Penn State alumnus – donated the painting to the university's art museum. A few years later, the mural was moved to the library, where it hung in the Loan Services area until it was relegated to its current location in 2000. Somewhere along the way, it got the name “Addams Family Vacation.” .

According to The New Yorker, the magazine in which the first Addams Family comics were published, the mural now hangs in the side hall of the Pennsylvania State University library, behind glass. The painting often goes unnoticed by the students who circulate in the place and by some members of the faculty.

The Addams Family members were not properly named individually until the premiere of the TV series "The Addams Family" in 1964. However, all are represented in the painting: Gomez, Morticia, Uncle Fester, Grandma, Wandinha, Pugsley and their Butler, Stumble, on the beach.

The mural was meant to be displayed at a beach resort, so Charles Addams set the scene on the beach. But being the Addams Family, he opted for a gloomy, overcast day for the outing.

According to the publication, the library is being renovated, and therefore the mural will move again. “It's a gem,” Richard Riccardo, associate director of facility planning at Penn State, told The New Yorker. "And it's lost down there."
