“Once Upon a Time”: Why did Ginnifer Goodwin, Snow White, leave the series?

Created in 2011 by Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis, “Once Upon a Time” was one of ABC's biggest hits. Seven seasons in, the story is set in a new, alternate world that brings fairy tales to life, which has won over a legion of fans. However, after the massive departure of important actors between 2016 and 2017, the production was canceled by its original broadcaster, leaving a huge 'stake' in the hearts of those who caught the show.

One of the most striking departures and, let's say, perhaps one of the most painful and felt by fans - and the program's audience - was the farewell of Ginnifer Goodwin, the interpreter of Snow White who lived under the alter ego of teacher Mary Margaret.

For those who didn't know, the actress engaged a real romance with her partner in the series, Joshua Dallas, who lived Prince Charming / David Nolan. The couple officially joined the toothbrushes in April 2014 and today they are the parents of two children, Oliver Dallas and Hugo Dallas – more fairy tale impossible, no? However, family life became a priority, requiring both to leave the series – which in fact happened.

Why did Snow White leave “Once Upon a Time”?

According to an interview the couple gave to Entertainment Weekly, family life became more important, so after seven years on “Once Upon a Time” they decided to leave the series in the sixth season and dedicate themselves to their children, a difficult decision, according to Goodwin. , and which Dallas also heeded.

“Leaving the show was a very difficult decision, but one that we spent years making. It involved a lot of discussion about parenting our showrunners because we really wanted to spend more time with the kids… We decided this was what was best for our family. While it was a difficult decision, it was one we were very confident about. We left in love,” Goodwin said.

The seventh year of the series, however, lost its magic with the departure of the veteran couple – and what formed the basis of the entire Enchanted family. The show saw the audience plummet, which meant a 37% reduction compared to the penultimate season. In addition to the departure of Goodwin and Dallas, Jared S. Gilmore (Henry) and Jennifer Morrison (Emma Swan), also left the production, causing even more impact, since they were also part of the main cast.

“We created a show about hope, where even in the darkest of times, a happy ending was always possible. But we never imagined the happy ending that was in store for all of us - years and years of adventure, romance, magic and hope. We are so grateful to our brilliant collaborators – the cast, crew and writers – as well as our partners at the studio and at the network who made this journey possible. But most of all, we want to thank the fans. Their fierce loyalty and devotion was the real magic behind Once Upon a Time.”

The last chapter of “Once Upon a Time” aired in May 2018 and managed to bring all the members together for a farewell ritual. Still to EW, Dallas spoke about the feeling of returning when asked about the official end of the series. “It's surreal to be back, but also wonderful. I'm so grateful to have been part of the fabric of Once Upon a Time, a show that seemed to strike a chord in so many people and had a fan base that was so passionate, so smart, so vocal and so willing to catch up with us. It will always be a great thrill in my life to have been a part of it.”

The series is currently available on Disney+.
