Antonio Banderas let slip in a recent interview that Shrek's return may be near. The actor voices Puss in Boots in the franchise from Shrek 2 to the character's most recent solo film, Puss in Boots 2: Last Order.
During the Red Sea Film Festival, the actor spoke about playing the character many years ago (via Deadline). “I've been that cat for almost 20 years,” Banderas said. “The first time I did Puss in Boots I was working on Broadway, so I did my first shoot there. I've done five movies. There will likely be another one, and Shrek is probably coming back.”

It's not entirely clear if the Antonio Banderas entries refer to an appearance by Shrek in another Puss in Boots solo film, or if a fifth film in the main franchise could be on the way. But, one way or another, apparently the ogre Shrek will have a return in the near future.
In 2018, Variety stated that more films in the Shrek franchise would be on the way, but since then, nothing has happened for a return of the character.
In Puss in Boots 2: The Last Order, Puss has already lost eight of his nine lives, and begins a mission to restore them. In addition to Antonio Banderas, the film's voice cast includes big names Salma Hayek, Florence Pugh, Ray Winstone, Olivia Colman, John Mulaney and Harvey Guillén.
As for Antonio Banderas, the actor will star in Indiana Jones and The Blue Ring alongside Harrison Ford, Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Mads Mikkelsen.
Puss in Boots 2: The Last Order arrives in Spanish cinemas on January 5, 2023. If Shrek 5 really gets off the ground, there is still no release date announced.
