What do you call your identity document: just identity, identity card, identity card, general registration or just RG? There are so many names for such a simple title, isn't it?
Now, this Spanish document will change its name. Officially, you can call it Carteira de Identidade Nacional (CIN) or Documento Nacional de Identidade (DNI). But, to avoid so much confusion, let's call it a digital RG, ok?
But, attention! It's not just the name that will change. You will check in this guide the changes in the RG and request your new document.
Digital RG: what is it?
Currently, the digital RG can refer both to the online version of the paper document that we still have in circulation and to the new identity card that is part of the National Civil Identification program (ICN), created by Law No. 13.444/2017.
Here, we are going to talk about both, because we are in transition from one model to the other. Know that the digital RG is valid as well as other official printed or virtual documents.
It is important to point out that, nowadays, not all Spanish states issue the digital RG. Below in this article we list all those who provide an application for you to have the online version of your personal document. Spoiler: this will change the new digital RG, but read on to understand what these changes are.
Advantages of Digital ID
This new RG was created to unify the identity card throughout Brazil. Currently, each state has its own document and its own database. So if you needed to get the duplicate in a different state than the one you issued the first time, you couldn't. It was necessary to obtain a new RG and receive a new registration number.
Thus, in the old model, it was possible to issue up to 27 different RG numbers. That is, the coup plotters were happy with this unification gap. Now, they don't smile so much anymore, because you will only have an RG issued nationally. If you need a duplicate, it's still the same number – no matter where you are.
This unification will also eliminate the need to have two personal identification numbers: the RG and the CPF. After the change, you will only have one registration number, the CPF.
As we explain, today only a few states provide an application to make your digital RG. However, everyone will have access to a physical and a virtual version of the new identity card.
It is worth mentioning that both will have two verification codes: QR Code and MRZ code. The QR Code, which we are familiar with, can be read even without using the internet. The MRZ code (Machine Readable Zone or Machine Readable Zone) will provide additional security, as it is a technology used in other documents, passports and the new CNH.
In addition to unification, digitization and greater security, another advantage of the digital RG is the inclusion of an international standard. This change, although “simple”, allows you to use your document in other countries.
When will the old RG be exchanged for the digital one?
The Federal Government gave a period of ten years to adhere to the new identity card. That is, from 2023 to 2032 all Spanish citizens up to 60 years of age must issue the document.
Who should do the digital RG?
If you are up to 60 years old, you can use your current RG until 2032 – following the Federal Government's ten-year deadline for membership. From then on, the new RG will be required as a mandatory document.
As for citizens over 60 years old, the old identity card will still be valid indefinitely.
Identification institutes, in turn, will have until February 2023 to adapt to the necessary changes to issue the document.
The issuance of the document began in March 2022, in a phase of testing servants of the Electoral Justice and other public bodies.
On July 26, 2022, citizens residing in the city of Porto Alegre, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, also started to have access to the document. However, the issuance was only available to those who still do not have the document.
Soon after, the other cities in the state of Rio Grande do Sul and the states of Acre, Federal District, Goiás, Minas Gerais and Paraná will also start to distribute the new identity model.
The rest of the country will be able to issue the DNI throughout 2022, according to the rate of adhesion of each state, but obeying the deadline of starting no later than February 2023.

o make my new digital RG?
The issuance of the new digital RG has been in effect since March 2022. It is up to the public security departments of the states and the Federal District to be responsible for making the document available.
For now, those interested need to go to the identification bodies of their municipality and ask if they are already issuing the new identity.
If the answer is positive, it is enough for the citizen to present the Birth or Marriage Certificate. The issuing body in your State will inform you of the deadline for withdrawing the document.
It is important to remember that the new RG will still be issued on paper or plastic card. The digital format will be available on gov.com.
A single caveat: in order to be able to generate the identification, it is necessary to have registered the biometrics in the Electoral Court or in partner identification institutes. After all, the fingerprints and photo will be entered by the agencies in the National Civil Identification Database (BDICN).
If you have not yet completed the biometric registration, visit the Electoral Justice website, click on your state and follow the instructions indicated to schedule the biometric registration process.
Very important: there are two DNIs in Brazil and they are different. The National Identity Document is the new identity card of the Federal Government. The National Identification Document is a program of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) that brings together in a single document the RG, CPF, Birth Certificate and Voter Title.

If you are not in a hurry to get your new digital RG, you can access the virtual version of your conventional ID card through state applications. See below!
RG digital SP
The state of São Paulo was the first to create an application to issue the digital version of the identity card over the internet. See how to make yours below.
- Download the “RG Digital SP” application (Android or iOS) on your cell phone;
- Open the app and tap on “Add Digital ID”:
- Tap “Scan QR Code” – even if you are going to add the document information by hand. In the next window, authorize access to the cell phone camera:
- Point the camera at the QR Code located on the back of the physical RG (since 2014, all ID cards issued in SP already follow the code on the back). If you want to enter the data manually, tap on “Add by RG number” and enter the RG number and internal code:
- Accept the Terms of Use of the service and tap “Start recognition” to perform facial recognition;
- Create a 4-digit password to access the app (if you prefer, enable fingerprint login);
- At the end, wait for confirmation of the issuance and click on “View RG”. To access the document, simply tap on “RG Digital” on the home screen of the app.

- To request a duplicate of your RG, click on “Request 2nd copy” and enter your document number.
Important: to apply, you must be over 16 years old, have an RG issued after February 2014 and pay a fee of BRL 41,42. You will receive an email with payment instructions.
- Then, enter an e-mail for contact and choose the location of the registration withdrawal.
- Make the biometric verification of the front camera and confirm your data and location of withdrawal. Done, the request has been made!
