“Peaky Blinders”: Cillian Murphy explains the success of the series

Actor Cillian Murphy, the protagonist of the period series “Peaky Blinders”, came forward and presented a theory about the success of the production.

“Peaky Blinders” picks up a gangster family after World War I. Set in Birmingham, the gang is loosely based on a real-life gang of the same name. The original Peaky Blinders were active in the city between the 1880s and 1910s. In the series, the Shelby family is led by Tommy, a war-torn man dealing with severe trauma.

Tommy Shelby is one of the most fascinating characters on television. He is ambitious, dangerous, unpredictable, intelligent and a born strategist, always looking to achieve what he wants.

Most fans of the series believe that Cillian Murphy and his character are the reasons for “Peaky Blinders” to be so successful. But, in an interview with BBC iPlayer (via Slash Film) the actor presented a different theory, and points to something that the series did that is different from the others: “Peaky Blinders” mythologized the working class.

“She really touched [the audience's] heart, touched on something that hadn't been done, certainly on British television before, that kind of mythologized the working class. The UK has done a lot of shows about the aristocracy, [but] it has never done a period series about the working class.”

But, of course, there is another thematic point of the series that makes it a success: people's fascination with the mafia. And Murphy tapped into this pop culture interest in the topic.

“So, people love gangsters, don't they?” said the actor. “Because gangsters live this cold life outside our own moral code, and that's quite unique and seductive and intriguing.”

“Peaky Blinders” was created by Steven Knight, and its final season arrived this year. But even though Tommy Shelby's story has been wrapped up, there is a movie within the universe of the series in development.

All six seasons of “Peaky Blinders” are available on Netflix.
