Trinity's role in "The Matrix Resurrections" has been updated to reflect the current world

“The Matrix Resurrections” co-writers David Mitchell and Aleksandar Hemon, along with director and story creator Lana Wachowski, have reinvented the role of the character of Trinity to better reflect today's world, more than 20 years after the first film's release.

In an interview with Polygon, Mitchell and Hemon, who also collaborated with Lana on the Netflix sci-fi series Sense8, spoke about the approach used to bring the character of Trinity back to life in the new Matrix, taking into account the legacy and culture of the franchise and its transformations over the years.

“Trinity in the original trilogy was a character and a woman of such power, diligence and skill,” Hemon enthuses. “The Matrix set a standard for female action heroes, so in a sense we had to live up to that, while also taking the passage of time into account. We had to, in a way, update Trinity, and at the same time maintain the same diligence that she had in the first trilogy. A lot of things have changed for the better in many ways, but not entirely, for women in film and for women in the world. Trinity's role had to reflect that."

To illustrate this change, the writing duo chose a specific scene, in which Trinity and Neo talk in a coffee shop. “It's one of the quieter scenes in the entire movie, where Thomas and Tiffany are just talking, and she does the most talking of the two. She's just talking about her life, sacrifices, disappointments and it's not over the top," says Mitchell. “He doesn't correct her, he doesn't discuss her. It doesn't explain anything. He just sits there, listens, and that's quietly revolutionary. I can't think of many movies where a man does that, especially movies with the level of action and explosions you get in a 'Matrix' movie.”

As to whether Trinity's arc in "The Matrix Resurrections" was a reaction to the last 20 years of cultural evolution regarding gender, or just a natural decision in the film's writing process, David Mitchell attributes to both.

“Yes, the film is responding to what has happened in the world in terms of gender relations and in other ways over the past 20 years. the should, the art should. But it's also true that, perhaps more than the trilogy, this movie is actually about both [Neo and Trinity], and the third thing they do, which is love. 'Matrix Resurrections' is an action film, it is a visually sumptuous feast. However, at its core, it is also a love story.”
