What is Siri and how does it work?
Siri is Apple's digital assistant, present on several of the company's devices, iPhones, iPads and Macs. It was originally launched in 2011 with the iPhone 4s and has since become a fundamental part of Apple's software experience.
It is an artificial intelligence system that can be used to search the Internet, send messages, call other people and more. The assistant can also answer questions about the weather, location and other information. Siri's artificial intelligence system also allows it to be used as a personal assistant, helping people remember appointments and tasks.
Apple's virtual assistant is able to understand and perform functions related to the cellular operating system through voice commands.
Siri gained great popularity on the Internet when people began to use not only the basic features of the functionality. Originally, the idea of the virtual assistant is to be a friend of the user, who answers questions, tells jokes and even sings improvised songs. These feats won the hearts of the public.
The technology now strongly linked to the cell phone manufacturer was developed in 2007 by the non-profit scientific research institute, SRI International. The project had an initial budget of $8.5 million and was developed by Dag Kittlaus, Cheyer Adam, Tom Gruber and Normam Winarsky.
Three years after development, Apple acquired the technology and released it in 2011, along with the iPhone 4s, the iOS 5 operating system.
The virtual assistant works by combining AI (Artificial Intelligence), Natural Language Processing and speech recognition technologies. It is powered by context awareness, service delegation and an interface that allows the user to type or send audio.
Within seconds, Siri interprets the user's speech, converts it into codes, identifies patterns and keywords, then determines the request and searches for a response based on the phone's database and online servers, formulating a complete and cohesive speech.
The name Siri is of Norwegian origin and has the meaning "beautiful woman who leads you to victory," which says a lot about the tool's purpose.

To use the digital assistant, simply press and hold the side button on your iPhone and speak to it. You can also use the tool to send messages, call others and more. To send a message, simply say "Send a message to [person's name]."
The assistant can also be used to search the Internet and answer questions about the weather, location and other information. If you are using the feature for the first time, you may need to ask it a few questions to familiarize yourself with its voice. After a few days of use, the tool should be able to recognize your voice more easily.
